Didn't Aquino get busted for D.U.I. and causing a death in the accident some yrs ago? I think his friend / amigo was killed in the crash, but don't quote me on that... I think Aquino did a little time in the cooler for his actions....? Who knows what??? MR.BILL
*Oh, i don't think it was embarrassment..I've never heard that term associated with ayala after the fight... Maldonado was still a top 10 fighter and very dangerous with huge power... I'm not sure where u got ur info that maldonado couldn't punch? Maldonado's problem was he trained hard for some..and others he didn't... He was trying to be a spoiler in the Ayala fight... Sure, he caught Ayala... But close to being Ko'ed? I haven't seen the fight in over 20 yrs, but u look at that fight..Ayala put a beating on Maldonado... Ayala was 18 years old *Hamsho would've been killed... Hamsho was more tough that good... Hamsho would've been attempting headbutts from round 1... *Ayala was scheduled to fight Duran after Duran won the title... Ayala would've beaten that Duran... no question.
bigstinky, Mario Maldonado was only 11-7-1 (5 KO's) going into that 3/28/81 fight. His only big victory was his last fight, an upset win over undefeated Roger Leonard, Ray Leonard's older brother. Before the Leonard victory, Mario had gone 2-4-0 in his previous 6-fights. Mario was only 21 at the time, and only had minimal amateur experience. He was brought in to showcase Tony Ayala, not put him on the canvas. Mario had no reputation as a big-puncher. I know Tommy Holmes, who was the referee for that fight. He said, Ayala was out, even when he got up. Maldonado was only a couple of punches away from a TKO.
lora, el correcto mundo, Mustafa Hamsho would have brutalized him. Head butts, elbows, shoulders,,,,,,,,,, Would have smothered him if bigstinky is reading, Mario Maldonado was not ranked in the Top 10 before the Ayala fight. 11-7-1 (5 KO's) and going 2-4-0 in his 6 previous fights, before upseting Roger Leonard. What it was, is that the announcers said, Maldonado knocked out Roger Leonard, the #10 WBA rated Junior Middleweight in his last bout. So according to them, Maldonado was now the new #10 rated Junior Middlweight.
Duran would have sadisticly torn Ayala too shreds & ripped out his heart no later than 6:yep Ayala would have crumbled mentally after 2 rounds once he'd encountered what it's all about when you get in the ring with real "High priest of Violence" & just the little matter of the fact that Duran could box would have spelt doom for Ayala, He's be beaten to pulp along with Duva who would have done his usual jumping into the ring Ayala even said if i can't KO him in 4 then i'd lose & Ayala ai'nt Hearns:smoke
Titan I. I like the way you think. Does Ayala hit the canvas and get counted out, stopped by the referee while he's defense-less, or saved by Lou Duva, and demanding a rematch.
"you're boxing beautifully baby!!"-chapter 1, Lou Duva's Book of Cornerman Tips "get out there and win this! You're behind on points, you need a knockout!!"-chapter 2 (used even when you are winning the fight 11 rounds to zero)
How about, 'Just the win tonights fight, you can look good next fight'.:-( Lou was the best in there sometimes. But a gracious loser, he was not:verysad
*I can remember the fight when it took place..but maybe ur right..maybe they were speaking of Leonard... I can hear the anouncer say Maldonado was ranked 6th... it was along time ago...
*For being out, all i can say..he recovered quick... the Maldondao fight was an unexpected Brutal fight... The Maldonado that fought Ayala wasn't the same who lost some of his other fights...Maldonado was in to win... I thought Ayala beat..he put a beating to a pretty damn good spoiler. *Hamsho was a scrub... not world class fighter...
bigstinky, No, the Mario Maldonado that fought 'El Torito' was the one and the same Maldonado that fought every other fight. A little wide-open and wild. He was over-matched early, and was put in with some decent prospects. Needless to say, he did expose Tony Jr. as being vulnerable to an overhand right, from way out in centerfield. Remember, Mario only had (5 KO's) in 19 fights. Lou Duva did say, 'This kid could knock-out Pipino Cuevas and Roberto Duran on the same day',,,,,and 'Thomas Hearns couldn't stay with him for 5-minutes'
