more than 20 rounds probably jonhson would use his superior stamina and would frustrate them with the clinch and he would win by ud or late tko. 12-15 rounds principally lyle would give him the hell, lyle was stronger, more muscular, heavier and probably harder puncher too. shavers might well finish the fight with a single shot. but i would go with jonhson, he was very smart. and he is one of the greatest hw ever, anyway i think he would have a hard time with both, principally with lyle.
Johnson probably wins. That 15 year time frame where he was never KOd, has to buy him some credibility in the hard to stop stakes.
Johnson definitely wins, Lyle had trouble with slick boxers and counter punchers. (Young and Quarry). Lyle was also vulnerable to the right hand lead throughout his whole career. Something Johnson would use for sure. Shavers wouldn't be able to find the correct punching room with Johnson's clinching tactics. I also think Johnson hits plenty hard enough to knock out Shavers as many did before. Johnson probably outlasts Shavers and knocks him out late.
Johnson is so slick, and though from a different era of fighting, he has all the tools ring smarts and stamina to out class both of these fighters.. A Fighter like Sam Mcvey from back in Johnsons day who Johnson defeated in my opinion mops the floor with both of them as well.. I know fighters fought at a different pace back then many fewer punches thrown but they would fight forever.. Johnson is all time top 10 Great Heavyweight and I would make him the heavy favorite over both. He would take both to the deep end of the pool and drown them!! Johnson tko8 Shavers and Johnson tko14 Lyle..
I like Johnson in both fights, they probably go the distance because Jack did not go looking for the stoppage often, though he might get Earnie out, if he blows late in the fight.
Neither Shavers or Lyle threw / tossed sharp enough shots to slip by Johnson's defense...... J.J. see's it all coming and easily parries or blocks the shots before landing with precise counters... MR.BILLbbb
I got to lean with Johnson on the class side but Ketchel and Willard and a small Choniski had him down or took him out so not so sure how Johnson would deal with a puncher. Could he get up like Ali did vs Frazier or Holmes vs Shavers and I dont want to hear he had such a great defense, Ketchel got through
The Ketchel scene of 1909 was SUPPOSEDLY caused cuz Stan welched on a pre-fight deal and caught an off-guard Johnson with a sucker shot.... I have the footage on tape..... Still, who really knows what deal was made and what Johnson was thinking going into round 12...... You know what I'm saying? MR.BILL
McVey looks lousy on the little film there is of him. Unless, these snippets are unfortunate in selection and not representative of his true abilities, he would need some major education/gym time to hang with moderns. In regards to Shavers and Lyle, Johnson will not get away with his favorite tactic of clinching and punching. These guys aren't O'Brien or Burns or even Hart (oh wait, he actually beat Johnson). These are strong heavies, in Lyle's case EXTREMELY strong. He would be in for a rude awakening. Versus Shavers, unless his Sunday punch lands, I give the nod to Johnson, potentially by stoppage. He had enough power to do it and stamina to let Shavers wear himself out. Versus Lyle, I have to pick Ron by close decision. Pressure, good power and strength win the day here. Johnson would be out of his comfort zone against an actual big, strong heavy. And Ron Lyle was nothing if not strong as an ox.
i pick johnson, but honestly i would not risk my money on him in 12 rounds against lyle. lyle could take a good shot, he was bigger, stronger and harder puncher than jonhson, of course jack was better boxer. in more of 12 rounds johnson would win without doubt, the stamina is the key factor
In regards to Mcvey your right there is no actual footage to base my opinion of him off of so who knows, I read a statement from Sam Langford (I think it was Sam) claiming that McVey was as good as Johnson, he gave McVey very high praise and claimed that he was one man that Johnson (though they did fight) really wanted no part of, his fight with Joe Jeanette what is written anyway is one of the most amazing things ever!! I'm sure some of it has been embellished but still classic stuff none the less.. Ron Lyle was a big strong man, but the main reason in which I favor Johnson is from what I see in Lyle vs Ali.. I feel as though this version of Ali is far from the Prime Muhammad.. And he takes Lyle out I think around the 12th round if memory serves. I feel as though a Prime Johnson is better then this version of Muhammad, just as slick and maybe even a heavier puncher. Like I said in my earlier post Johnson is slick enough and smart enough to get through some shaky moments with Lyle to win late by a tko..
