Caught a fading Victor Galindez at the most opportune time.
Galindez was under-trained, not in best of shape, and sick with the
flu entering his bout with Mike Rossman.
Mike, took full advantage, and became an 'overnight sensation'.

It was in the works, that Muhammad Ali might take on one more fight,
and let Rossman challenge for the title, in 1979.
    $5,000,000 for Ali
    $1,000,000 for Rossman
Play up the Jewish heritage for Mike, and have the fight in New York.

    Yep,,,,turpinr

I still have the Daily News with the article.
Promoters attempting to put together an Ali-Rossman fight at
Madison Square Garden, New York or the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island,
    for early 1979.
'The Jewish Bomber' has a chance.
The fight might not have been a WBC or WBA sanctioned bout, but the public would have been 'hood-winked' into buying it;)

I saw Rossman get destroyed by Yaqui Lopez.
Before that fight, Rossmans people started playing up the 'Jewish Bomber' stuff, and
labeled Lopez as not an Mexican-American, but a 'South of the Border' wet back.
Yaqui took it out on Rossman big time.

    Yaqui Lopez,
That fighter got a raw deal,
Very Good fighter,,,,,wrong place at the wrong time.
Rossman and his management under-estimated him big time.

I actually always Enjoyed watching MiKe Rossman fight, Very Textbook Style, Hands Up, Elbows Tucked In, and Heavy Handed when he Beat the Fading Galindez he Employed the Perfect style with Long Jabs, Right Crosses, then Back Behind the Jab to Keep Victor Occupied, once he started mixing in some Left Hooks, you knew that they had sussed Victor was off Colour and this would be their night, It was not so easy with a motivated Victor n the Rematch, Once a fitter Victor started using some head movement to deny Mike that Arms Lenght Safety Zone, Victor was always going to be the Victor, Mike worked off the Jab, if he could peg you behind it, he could move to stage two, but if an opponent could slip the Jab and come inside, then Mike seemed Stuck in first gear, in Short a very good "On Top" boxer. i must admit, as stated, i did like his textbook style though.

I agree, not a bad fighter,,,,,, but a little more lucky than good.
But don't base everything on the Galindez I fight.
The 'Bull' was drained for that fight.

In a true meeting of those two, Galindez ripped Mike apart 7-months later.

I remember Ring Magazine started really banging the drum for Rossman after this fight, playing up his heritage as a "Mazeltough" champion (ugh).

You really need to watch more boxing if you think Rossman is one of the poorest world champions ever.He probably wasn't even in the top 5 least talented champions when he held the title.

He was vulnerable and not as talented as many of his contemporaries sure, but overall was a solid fighter imo, if only for a short time.

Yes, Ring Magazine coined that phrase.

His first defense was against Italian Aldo Travesaro, on the east coast.
Travesaro was supposed to be the #8 rated Light Heavyweight.

New York Daily News called the fight an 'Aldo Travesty.
The worst first defense for any Champion, in the Northern Hemisphere.

They said, Aldo was so bad, he should be made to take a train
    back to Italy.

Rossman wasn't that good, but at least he was able to wrangle the WBA title from the fading, arrogant, protected Galindez. The WBA loved Galindez. He had more than a few questionable decision victories. Of course, Victor got a rematch after crying that he wasn't in shape - whose fault was that - his. But, the "daddy" WBA said "it's okay Victor, we'll fix it for you." So, the hour of the rematch with Rossman arrives. Mike is in the ring. Television is ready to show the fight. Victor, at the very last minute, cries he's not ready to fight. So, the fight is canceled. Victor gets no punishment from te WBA, and is allowed to train better, and the rematch finally occurs and of course by then Victor is in shape and beats Rossman. Fortunately, Marvin Johnson beat the crap out of Galindez in his next fight, to rid this "champion" from the top of the game for good. So, overall I have fond memories of Mike Rossman.
