No way it's more popular than Ice Hockey but I'll agree to disagree. Keep in mind that the UFC is not shown in a lot of countries, even in countries like Japan MMA organizations have been dying. So how can the world know about GSP when the UFC is only televised in a few countries? GSP is a UFC fighter we're not talking all of MMA, some countries don't even like watching the UFC and prefer other MMA organizations instead, UFC is a North American Organization Baseball is played and televised globally.

You said it was leaps and bounds in front of ANY combat sport, I disagreed pointing out the huge following of BOXING not the UFC promotion. I can hardly see how combat sports in general can be overshadowed by ice hockey. It has a big following in Canada and the US and that's it, combat sports are popular worldwide. Baseball is played globally but so is waterpolo, doesn't make it a popular sport, many sports are televised globally, Australia's own rugby league state of origin games are shown on US television, how many times have you watched it??

I agree that Gretzky is more famous than GSP, but I think GSP is more famous than ANY other ice hockey player.

WOW!!! Is this a serious thread? I just came here to the mma forum to read up on tonight gsp fight and this is what i see? HAHAHAHAHA! delusional mma fans unite. Go ahead and ask 10 people on the street who GSP is, and I bet 2 will know, but all 10 will know Gretzky. He is known as simply Gretzky. you dont even need to use his first name. GSP...well, you need both of them, sometimes even all 3.

GSP, and all mma fighters are fringe celebrities, known big only in their respective cult followings. Gretzky is a worldwide celebrity, rivaled only by Tyson, Jordan, Woods, and maybe someone like Montana. Until GSP is known by billions, not millions, but BILLIONS of people as simply Pierre, then restart this thread.

Don't get me wrong, GSP is an awesome mma fighter, and i'm proud to call him Canadian, but on the same level as The Great One??? C'mon!

Gretzky > Mayweather, Pacquiao, Moss, McGuire, Iverson, Carter, Harrison Ford, Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, RYAN SEACREST > GSP lol

ALL North American Pro Leagues are more popular than boxing worlwide. NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB all surpass boxing in terms of revenue and popularity. How many boxers earn 100 million dollars over 10 years? 5, maybe 10? You can find 10 players a team in those 4 mentioned sports that earn more, and theres over 30 teams in each league

I agree that Gretzky is prolly more well known then GSP, but you can't say NHL NFL MLB NBA are more popular worldwide because we, north american, are dumb enough to pay people million to ****in shoot a ****in ball in a net, hit a ball with a bat or throw a puck in a net, that's plain stupidity. Again thinking that baseball is more popular then MMA worlwide is completly ludicrous, Basketball too, FFS even ice hockey.

Are people in here that stupid ?
So indian and chinese(wich almost represent HALF the population of the earth) people are interested with baseball, basketball and ice hockey ? LOL
Maybe cricket and maybe basketball for the chinese, but ice hockey..cmon....less then half the planet can be equipped to play ice hockey...

    Can you prove this ?

Yes I think with a population of 150 000 000 we can say it has a real impact on the 1 700 000 000 chinese and 1 300 000 000 indian that mostly don't give a **** about baseball... now take you little opinion based on nothing and shoved it up your ass :D

    :deal

Some people forget that North America isn't the entire world, cricket surpasses all the American leagues, it's fanatic fan base in India alone is probably enough to over shadow every American league.

I don't doubt this in Canada. But as fanatical about ice hockey as you are in Canada it's not a big sport outside of North America, like mentioned elsewhere many countries wouldn't even bother with the sport due to warmer climates. Oh and dude, people know St Pierre by just his initials, the same way you reffered to him.

    This shouldn't even be asked!!

Who is the ******ed mother****er who would even consider GSP more popular then Watne Gretzky? This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Wayne Gretzky will forever be more popular then ANY fighter, ever!! I hate the youth of today, such complete morons.

At one point Janet Jones (Gretzkys wife) was more popular than GSP is now.

1 out of 10 people on the street will know him by GSP, the other couple of people might know him as George St. Pierre. The rest, well, they'll have no clue. They'll think he's the PRESIDENT of Canada! Gretzky, however, transcends his sport, and sport as a whole. He's a world figure, recognized originally because of hockey, now just known because he is THE GREAT ONE, WAYNE GRETZKY! LOL

Seriously though, there is absolutely no comparison between the two in terms of general popularity. Gretz is more well known than any mma fighter, past and present, and if one could quantify such a thing, possibly more than every fighter combined. Wait, we could compare endorsements, lifetime earnings, television exposure, and even throw in some subjective analysis, such as who has contributed more to their respective sport by bringing in fans. Gretzky is THE reason there is hockey in the southern states. You think GSP is the reason for mma popularity in Canada? Or anywhere else in the world?

GSP might sell out a venue in Quebec, but Wayne sold out EVERY game he played in. Arenas would have 6000 fans one night, then 26,000 the next if Edmonton, St Louis, etc. was playing with Him, then back to 6000 the next after He left. He contributed to sold out arenas for years, and that's 80-82 games every year, not 2 or 3 fights a year.

Please get real people. Gretzky is in a class which only a few other elite members of the human race belong to, including actors, politicians and athletes.
