So Fitz is a Brit even though he never stepped in a British ring. I'm sorry but I don't agree. Wayne McCullough is British by your definition but I'm pretty sure I saw him carry the Irish tricolour as the opening ceremony of the Seoul Olympics. Barry McGuigan was born in Clones, Co. Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland but declared himself a British fighter and became a British citizen. No historian says Jimmy McLarnin is anything other than Canadian although he was born an Ulster protestant. Just like the records books show Gene Tunney has four victories over Greb no matter what way you want to spin it. Big Greb fan myself by the way.
In 'Babyface goes to Hollywood' McLarnin's bio the whole emphisis is on his 'Irishness'. It also mentions that he said...'what did Vancouver ever do for us' He was born in Ulster and it is said his people came from the Sandy Row area. So I would go for....land of birth lol
I go by ethnicity and were they fight Pro so Lewis - British/Jamaican DLH - American/Mexican Tszyu - Aussie/Russian ect.... so fitzsimmons would probobly
Look at it like this, Lennox Lewis was born in Britain. So obviously he's going to have a glass jaw. But at the age of 12 he moved to Canada and started boxing in CANADA. His glass jaw became better and better. Obviously you seen bits of his glass chin in the McCall and Rahman fights, but you can't completely cure a European glass jaw. So all it comes down to is that Lennox Lewis wouldn't have been as great as a boxer as he was, if he didn't train and fight in sweet ol Canada.
:good muhammad ali is irish, joe louis is scottish and sugar ray robinson was definitely english in that case
nah yer got too pass the local tribal test & if yer can speak the local lingo & support the local footie team then thats what defines you IMO be you pink/black or orange. I met this ozzie feller in the middle east & after we ripped him about the cricket over a dozen beers he said he was actually german & moved to oz as a kid, his name was werner, so we called him werner the vermin & as far as we all were concerned he was a ozzie as thats what he sounded & acted like. Your an ozzie you german ****
Wayne mc cullagh fought for ireland like every other boxer in these islands regardless of religion or creed because its the country where he was born. There is no separation between north and south in boxing therefore there aint no N. Ireland team he could fight for. Also, to the best of my knowledge, McCullough lived in Silverstream or did so for most of his youth before going to the states. He didnt go to the UK cos eddie futch wanted him over there so ya cant blame him for that. Also, i dont know if your aware, but when mcCullough won the bronze in the olympics, a civic reception was held for him in the City Hall, dinner and banquet kinda ****. When Waynes dad Drew asked where was Michael Carruth was (the gold medal winner) he was told that it was for Wayne only. His father, to his full credit, refused to sit and kicked up a stink as to why Carruth never got the invite. As for 'barry the brit' as you put it, there are plenty of catholics like him who fought and held british titles, guys with irish passports, so what? Its a sport. Was charlie magri or maurice hope born in england? Yet they became champions under the flag and fair play to them. You do what you have to do. I may be wrong here but, like the Lewis reference, if your living in a country then your entitled to represent them at amatuer level. A guy i know pretty well boxed for canada even though he was only there a few years. Same guy knows Lewis very well too and said he always classed himself as english. I dont understand your problem.
the country you are residing at the time is the nationality i am living in canada so i am canadian it does not matter where i was born i am living in canada and i dont need to pay to get a little piece of paper to say i am canadian and if i move to the states i automatically become a citizen of that country as soon as i land and should be entitled to all the perks that it has to offer:think
Was Jones born even remotely close to Britain? :-( Even though Jones chin isn't great, it's a known fact that the European Jaw is 100x worse than the average American Jaw. :deal
Mc Cullough is european and has one of the best set of whiskers of any fighter to ever set foot in a ring
