Maidana's antics at the opening bell seem to divide opinion, so I thought I'd make a thread. For those that didn't see the fight, Khan went to touch gloves at the start of the fight and Maidana instantly threw a haymaker at him- ignoring usual courtesy. I think that was shameful, verging on disgraceful. A couple of posters have argued that there is nothing compelling MM to touch gloves and he was within his rights not to. So why didn't he just ignore the gesture? Would he have thrown a power punch at the bell if Khan hadn't offered a glove? I doubt it. It was just blatant opportunism. Obviously sportsmanship isn't written into the rules, and no one is forced to observe it. But anyone who follows football will be familiar with drop ball situations where the team with the injured player gives possession back to the other side. They don't have to pass back, it is just convention to do so. So... Marcos Maidana- is he moral? Well, is he?
You have to protect yourself at all times, and you have to know your opponent. If you are cool with him then touching gloves shouldn't be a problem, but if you aren't then it is your fault for not protecting yourself if you get clocked. It's all about knowing your opponent.
You seem to be offended by this. I think it was cheap, but it was legal and if Amir got caught with it all he could do is laugh and beat himself for not being alert. I had somebody try that when I tried touching gloves with him and I just laughed when he attempted it and moved on
I hate touching gloves at the start of the fight. You just tapped gloves during the referee instructions. Is it really necessary to do it again. How about just coming out fighting straight away? Unless they make a rule that says you have to touch gloves at the start of the fight, then Maidana did nothing wrong.
Cmon, you guys are whining cause the slugger doesn't have a heart of gold. I enjoyed his interview. "I'll fight whoever"... walks off. Give me that over cutsey talk trying to sound marketable, e.g. Victor Ortiz. What's going on with the constant trunks fixing. He almost got caught while doing it once.
Didn't Amir also try to touch gloves at the start of one of the rounds in between the 1st and 12th? What was that about?
I would have touched gloves if I was Maidana. YOu don't want to seem like an AZZhole when the ref is watching.
