It almost happened, After Muhammad Ali knocked out Jurgen Blin in Switzerland, on 12/26/71. McAlinden's manager (George Middleton) called Ali a coward and and a 'draft-dodging Yank'. In the ring celebration after the fight, Ali called out McAlinden, and wanted to meet him in London. Dangerous Danny McAlinden had beaten up Rudy Clay (Muhammad Ali's brother) on the 'Fight of the Century' undercard vs. Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden (3/8/71) 9 months ealier. McAlinden beat the then undefeated Rudy Clay (9-0-0). McAlinden and his manager had made disparaging remarks about Muhammad Ali in the U.K., about his upcoming fight with an undeserving Jurgen Blin.
why didn't danny mcalinden never fight chuvalo ,he was the british empire champion?no body would give george a shot at that title even though he was the top contender for years
He was too busy working the 'doors' with lenny mc lean at the time. Danny beats Ali within 4 rounds, and thats being generous
Correct. 3 years after winning it. Danny had fights against bugner and chuvalo fall through because of injuries.
An Ali vs. McAlinden fight would have been a smash in Madison Square Garden or the United Kingdom, in early 1972. At the time, 'Dangerous Danny' was 25 years-old, and had a record of 20-1-2 (17 KO's). A 6' 1", 195 lb. 'a crazy wild punching brawler'. He would have made it exciting, before going out on his shield. Was a much better fighter than Jurgen Blin.
for the same reason that the likes of british boxings queen mother, henry cooper, never fought chuvalo.they'd have been battered
Too right :good The fact that McAlinden and his manager were mouthing off about Ali,would have put Muhammad in a chastising mood, and Danny boy would have been slaughtered. Danny Boy would have found out the hard way that the elder Ali brother was a totally different proposition from the younger.
Well, at least it would have been a 'wild fight' to say the least. Both hated each other, for real. Not so sure Ali takes Danny Mac out in 1 or 2,,,,,,it took him awhile to get Jurgen Blin out of there. And Danny hung in there for 10-Rounds with Larry Middleton in early-1972. when Middleton was one dangerous dude, that nobody wanted to tangle with.
yeah he was:goodbut it was 8 rounds.bugner took him the full 10 and i thought hungarian/aussie/brit/anywhere joe would have beaten him
Turp,,, Back then in late-1971 and 1972, Ali wasn't knocking out anybody early. And, he turned down Larry Middleton as an opponent in February 1972 in Las Vegas.
Smart move, In May 1972, Jerry Quarry vs. Larrry Middleton in the United Kingdom. The only person who thought Irish Jerry won, was referee Harry Gibbs. 4-3-3 in Rounds. It was an eliminator to meet Ali in Las Vegas. I had Middleton beating Jerry,,,,,,,,:-(
