Last night, GSP and Koscheck fought standing up for 5 rounds. Perhaps GSP would never use those tactics in a fight with BJ Penn, but for argument's sake let's say they fought for a third time in summer 2011, and both men decided to stand up for the duration, and both concentrated more on using their hands, their boxing skills, rather than utilizing kicks and knees. Who would your money be on? :bbb
gsp. bj penn has not shown that he can punch with an opponet that moves in and out side to side. in the second fight gsp outclassed bj in the standup anyway. however, bj penn has a shot with his punching power alone, and solid chin.
Its very hard to say with GSP as his standup and his wrestling are pretty much inseperable, he works at range so effectively because anyone trying to close the distance too aggresively is likely to end up on their back.
gsp's striking complements his wrestling and his wrestling complements his striking. no one else in mma combines the two arts as well as gsp. if you consentrate on his strikes he can use them to set you up for a takedown. fear of the takedown will distract you from strikes. what to do?
Frankie Edgar isn't a boxer, he's a pitty-pat points-scorer in MMA striking. In a real boxing match, he'd eat jab all night and get nowhere. Edgar has perfected the art of point-scoring striking that will never lead to a stoppage ever. It worked once on BJ (BJ beat him 1st time), it won't work on all fighters.
if you think edgar won all the rounds in both fights against bj your crazy! I thought edgar edged bj penn in the first fight- it was close no doubt.:deal I agree with edgar having no real power, he did mark up penns face though. adaptability is always in gsp's favor, bj doesnt seem to improv a gameplan too well.
In a "real" boxing match Edgar would have won on points just like he did in mma. Guys like Paul Mallignagi (sp?) win fights that way all the time. Also, why would Penn's jab all of a sudden work wonders with boxing gloves on if it didn't work with mma gloves on? It's not like Penn didn't try it... Anyway, to the original question, if you watch the first round of their first fight, GSP actually strikes with Penn very well. He lands some good punches and kicks and all Penn really did was land a couple of punches. The thing is, one of them was just right to break GSP's nose and swell his eye, but strike for strike GSP did very well. He mixes so many more kicks in than Penn that in a kickboxing match he'd have the advantage. A boxing match woudl be closer but I still thing GSP's movement and size would be too much.
Id say GSP after this fight, but I would have gone with BJ before. Look how much Georges hands (jab lead left hook, cant remember him throwing them nearly as crisp before)have improved after spending a bit of time at the Wildcard. He's such a quick learner that a full 6 weeks training camp with Freddy Roach would be a frightening proposition for BJ to face. BJ always had good offensive skills, but he has no footwork, head movement ect, as someone already mentioned the Edgar fight
I'd say GSP after last night too. Pretty damn good improvement in his hands. Still kinda stiff but, he is still young I think he may one day have the best boxing in MMA if he keeps this up.
