I was running in the cold this morning. I had a cough before I started but wanted to run because I have a fight this Thursday. I pushed myslef hard and was feeling weak for about 15 minutes afterwards. I was spitting up green **** the whole way, maybe it helped clear my system, because my cough is almost all away now.

I always feel like coughing if I have really pushed myself, cold weather just makes me feel my lungs more.

Your muscles don't warm up as easily in cold temps, so naturally your speed will not be as pronounced. Totally normal.

As far as the coughing, I had to smile at that, because I know so many that have that happen to them among the runners I hang out with. I think it has to do with you breathing in cold air through your mouth, creating a disturbance in the warmed passages of your throat. Totally natural, don't sweat it.

I used to hate running in the cold until I started warming up a bit beforehand.

If you're running long, cold temps are your friend. Those runs are usually done at a more routine pace, where you don't really care what your speed is (to an extent). You also don't dehydrate as fast.

I've mentioned in a previous post about how much I use to run to stay in shape and I found running in the cold was a bit harder initially, but once warmed up, it was much easier.

Stretching and warming up before beginning running helped me. Also, that first mile or so of breathing cold air did irritate my throat a bit, but once I got my breathing in rhythm, it went much better. It also helped to breath only through my nose.

I like running in the cold, but I find it takes me a lot longer to find my rhythm, so I tend to go for longer slower runs in the winter months.
Of course, it's only cold here for about 2 months a year, and even then, cold is a very relative term, it never gets below freezing here.

Many years ago, BK, I developed a cough running in sub-zero weather that was so bad I could barely speak for months. Doctors theorized it was a form of asthma caused by the cold in my lungs. They had no cure. It would come 'n go of it's own volition, 'n still comes on, years later, even though I live in warm weather.

Running in cold weather with a muffler (or painter's mask) over my nose 'n mouth was a big help.

    me too.
i'd start off with a hat and gloves on but after a few hundred metres i'd have warmed up and off they'd come.i used to get home and go in through the kitchen where it was warm and i'd immediately start coughing.

how did you get on with the asthma JG ??
i fell off my mountain bike in april and broke 2 ribs then got a chest infection.when the doctor tested my lungs with that blow test it was woeful so he gave me a prescripion for 2 inhalers.
i asked the doctor if you could get asthma at 52 and he told me you could get it at any age, which was news to me.

Doctors never could say for sure it was a form of asthma, t -- just had similar symptoms. So, it's a mystery cough, a nuisance that comes 'n goes every couple years...but it all started running in sub-zero weather.

Yeah I think its normal the coughing thing, I get that just seems like something with breathing hard in the cold air, the breathing mask (like doctors have) sounds like a good idea, I mean it would keep the air youre breathing warmer.

You can get yourself warmed up enough to where the cold doesnt bother your body but it seems like it still bothers my lungs no matter what
