Why did Morales force Pacquiao to wear Winning gloves the first time?

They bitched about the gloves before the fight.

And why put it in the contract in the first place? Are you saying morales' side had nothing to do with it and that it qwas purely there by coincidence?

Wrong, Roach and Pacquiao did not know that there is a clause that Pacquiao should wear winning. The disastrous Murad(former promoter of Pacquiao), is the one negotiating with Morales camp.

When Roach learned that Pacquiao should wear the pillow gloves, he gets mad at it.

Be careful what you call a pillow......Erik Morales was hurting Pacquiao with those pillows, so much so that at one point in the fight it looked like Pacquiao might quit.

In hindsight, having both fighters wear Winning may have saved Pacquiao from a KO loss!

Just watched the fight yesterday and I never thought it looked like Pacquiao might quit or was hurt that bad.

Having both fighters wear Winning couldn't have saved Pacquiao. Because even if Pacquiao wanted to wear Reyes, Morales actually wanted to wear Winning. So if both fighters got to wear whatever gloves they wanted, Morales would still be wearing Winning.

Basically, Morales got to wear the gloves he wanted, and Pac was contractually obliged to wear the gloves that Morales wanted.

Lol, every time I want to quote you there is more to the comment.

Pacquiao gets mostly unfair criticism and some fair criticism as well. The question you posed is fair, but criticism is hypocritical because Morales did it to his benefit just like Pacquiao negotiates contracts to his benefit.

I come from the old school mentality that fair is when both opponents have the same gloves because that is what I grew up watching. To make my example more clear I will pose a ridiculous example. If we are in a street fight and we both have our choice of minor weapon, bat or crow bar. Both probably about even weapons but it leaves open to debate the which choice won the fight. If the street fight is just our fists then we know physically who is superior.

Now coming back to boxing contracts. There really isn't such thing as free choice. Most of the time fighters choose based on what they think is better, but they haven't tried all the products out there to really know. Second there is always a power differential and the most popular fighter with the more powerful promoter gets what they want. I think allowing glove brand choices is fine, but it's a slippery slope into what could be available choice in the future. Should fighters be able to come in with different glove sizes, different types of wraps? I think standardization helps make an equal playing field.

In the current environment if I was coming up to fight a top guy and he put stipulations against me it would suck, but that's part of the game until you put in your dues. It would make it just that much more motivating for me to kick his ass and say I whooped him even with the stipulations.

The only way you are going to know who is the best boxer is for them to fight on an open turf buck naked. I don't really want to see that.

Motivation can only help you overcome so much.

I won't hide that I think that win was great for Morales and under the circumstances he was the better man that night. But I don't think Pac won the trilogy because Morales was shot, I think he wins it regardless. First fight, Pac had to move up in weight and was cut above the eye by a headbutt early in the fight. Despite that, I scored it only 115-113 for Morales. And that's without even mentioning gloves stipulation that Morales put in the contract, which we can all agree did not help Pacquiao at all.

If people don't wanna discuss this fight and the circumstances around it, then they are free to avoid the thread.

As for standardization, there is one in place. The Reyes gloves fall within that standard.

Long before any of you losers even heard of the great southpaw from the Phils, "Pacquiao" was already a national treasure.
WE ALL KNEW that his team was complaining about the gloves BEFORE the match.
It was all over the local news.
Stop shaming yourselves -- the complaint was given BEFORE the bell rang, not after the fight was concluded.

And are all posters here in ESB nothing more than fatties who only played fantasy sports and chess?
Changing gears for sports is a big deal you freaking geeks.
And yes, that includes socks. (although Pac bitching about it all over the news was laughable)
It's such a shame that I even need to explain this on a supposed boxing forum.

Was it a ***** move in part of Morales?
I'd like to say not quite, but you guys have to be ******s to not even realize that Morales' team was using their advantages in dictating the contract to neutralize Pac's punching power on some levels.
I mean c'mon, WHY THE HELL would they even put it up if it was such a non-sensical clause?
I think Pac was 40-2-1 coming into that fight, 30 of those wins by KO (with lots of KO's and KD's on the early rounds).
He was the freaking Tyson of the lighter weight classes.
    Go figure.

Nonetheless, the better fighter won that night, fair and square, if not by a small margin. (final scorecards were all 115-113 for Morales)
It was the head butt on the 5th round that affected the outcome of the fight more than the gloves used tho, IMO.

Looks like here, he is using Cleto Reyes for the first two Barrera fights, and Winning for the third. Also, Winning for the Hernandez fight.

Seems like he mainly just uses those two brands.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I'm almost certain that Morales wore Cleto Reyes in fights 2 and 3 with Pacquiao.
