I think Roach was really disappointed in Amir

Chill people, your getting a bit carried away. Every coach will be pissed when his fighter takes stupid risks, Roach still says there are things about Pacman that he cant change, including some conditioning methods he doesnt like ie the sticks to the body. Its still relatively early days with Khan and Roach. This one fight doesnt define his entire career. Just as his fight against Kotelnik didnt define his career...a fight fought to a game plan, after which some regular posters on here said Khan will never be in an exciting fight again.

 

I thought that after it. But look in fairness he came out with the win and a **** oad of respect from doing what he did.

 

The thing about boxing is that taking silly risks is more of a double-edged sword than other sports. In football if a defender fannies around with the ball at the back it's just stupid. But, when Khan went to war with Maidana, he won a lot of respect and new fans. Roach won't be happy to see Khan taking risks but he might reflect that Khan did get away with it and that fight will have done wonders for Khan's career. Obviously if Khan wants to step up and take on someone like Mayweather he needs to be far more discipined but that's all in the future.

“He will be the best British fighter of his era, that’s for sure. And I am not the kind of guy to lavish such praise lightly, believe me!”

Roach added: “I had Steve *Collins at one time. Nigel Benn, Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton and Lennox Lewis have all flown the flag for Britain and Amir is doing it right now. The new guy on the block is Amir Khan.

“The others had their times. Now it is Amir’s turn and he can dominate British boxing for the next five or six years.

“I believe Khan is the best of his era and when he dominates *someone such as Maidana in the way he did, it certainly makes a few people sit up and open their eyes.

“Everybody was expecting Maidana to land one knockout punch and win the fight but I have never thought his bout would be like that.”

I think Roach knew Khan wanted to get something off his back, prove a point, maybe not taking that many shots but maybe a few risks were allowed.

But I think now that Khan has made his point that he has a chin, this wont happen again, Roach wont let it.

 

I hope people realise Amir won the fight. All he's got to learn is to a bit more careful defensively. Some if the posts here make out like he lost.

Roach probably just felt a bit foolish for his 'win every round' quote before it.

But he gave Khan plenty of praise afterwards too.

 

Bradley always come across really well, seems like a great guy. Why don't American's pay more attention to their boxers, he should be more famous by now. Why can't his promoter get him on talkshows and stuff, get him some publicity.

Roach will just have more things to work on with Khan. Better to see the mistakes now than later!

 

I agree with most posts in thread but we do have to remember it's ok saying next time Amir will get it right. He really has no hiding place at 140 unless he wants to hide behind the belt and he doesn't. He has to get it right or he's gonna get beaten. No matter how old he is, he's on top of mountain and he has to stay there and learn on the job and learn fast.

He did not go out there to fight like that and anyone who thinks that..well..i just leave it at that. He got caught and the gameplan went out of window. He allows his primal instincts to cloud his boxing and it's something that i think sadly will be the downfall of him in major contests.

It was a great performance in one way but in cold light of day Freddie will look at that fight from a technical/tactical viewpoint and not be happy. Showing heart and a chin is one thing but getting away from gameplan and nearly throwing it all away is not something he will be happy about. The man's a perfectionist.

 

This had more to do with Maidana than Roach. Maidana's power and relentless pressure seems to create disarray in his opponent. They stop fighting to a plan and start trading with him, the same thing happened to Ortiz he was disturbed by the pace and power of Maidana and got involved in a slugging match. Maidana creates chaos, Ortiz let adrenalin take over, so did Khan. The thing with Maidana is, he remains cool and calm even when swinging, he never loses his head.

The only boxer who I have seen remain calm under Maidana's power and pressure is Kotelnik, (I thought their fight was a draw) who is still a top level boxer and he will still challenge.

 

It just shows that at 24, Khan isnt the finished article, he still has about 4 years to reach his peak, he will improve with every fight, adding more and more to his game

 

Funny how Roach was saying before the fight that what he liked most about Khan is that he listens and always does as he's told.
