I think he's a good prospect man but I don't think i'd say the best in the world .What about Saul Alvarez man .

 

Is this whole thread a **** take. DeGale can slap his way round domestic level like most decent amateurs can, but no way can he make a name for himself at world level, not until he learns to punch properly anyway.

Mind you, Calzaghe managed to slap his way through fighters like Manfredo for a lengthy WBO reign and avoid anyone decent or in their prime, so maybe DeGale has hope.

 

degale is treets ahead of saul alverez in skill and talent. saul is a very good boxer but he isnt a skilled boxer! imo

to right. people are just ignoring degales skill because they dont want to like him. the fact the groves still gets picked as the better prospect is mindboggl;ing

 

he needs to adopt some method to take the slappyness out of his shots, and somehow in doing that maybe try and get a little closer to his opponent and have some angle in his arm instead of mainly straight arm slappy no power shots....

dont get me wrong i like de gale a lot, but id love to see him try some methods of hitting harder, cos he can allways avoid the shots coming his way with his quick feet and movement.

 

Id still say Matt Korobovs a better world prospect, im not even sure that Chunky's the best prospect in the U.K for me thats still Frankie Gavin a more technically astute fighter. With Jimmy Mac DeGales always going to be in good shape which is great for him but not sure if he'll be taught enough to make the jump to the world stage, for that a trainer change might be needed.

On the subject of power, yea its not thunderous and any world level pressure fighter would walk right through it (yes that includes Abraham atsch) It has improved however, despite still throwing the open hand amateur shots every now and then he is turning them over better and sitting down on them more each fight so good to see the progress but its needs to be improved further still to be a world force at Super Middle

I look at this way...because there's a danger of being too critical or overzealous about this kid James DeGale.

Stick on videos of Carl Froch, who is probably the best at 168lbs right now, and see how good he looked and who he was fighting 9 fights into his professional career.

Everything else is purely speculation. The progress speaks for itself, DeGale is a talented kid...

 

If he tightens up his punch technique DeGale will go all the way to the top, I wouldn't mind predicting that. That's his main achilles heal at the moment. He throws some excellent, clean counters that hint at his potential quality but the rest of the 'cuffing' shots to put it kindly need tightening up. There is no reason to throw punches like that, he has natural handspeed without doing so, look at the left hook he hit Smith with prior to the stoppage out of the orthodox stance. That was a proper punch, we need more of that. He could also tighten his jab up. I think he's drawing leads a lot of the time but when he uses it as a weapon its better.

 

He's clearly a potential world champ but "Best prospect in world boxing?"

We regularly rip into the Irish posters here when they get over excited about whoever but it seems we're not entirely immune ourselves.

 

The only prospect in the world who I'd clearly put ahead of James DeGale is David Lemieux, and it's still too early to tell who's better than who. Lemieux has had 25 fights...DeGale only 9. Lemieux could end up being a front runner...who knows? Who knows?
