Which fighters today have more skill than him? And specifically, who at heavyweight?

Layne won more rounds, which are counted as points. Therefore he outpointed Walcott.

Walcott fluke injured his hand in the third round. You have to take his word with a grain of salt but it would explain why he quit throwing his signature punch against a guy who was seemingly open for it.

At HW maybe. He's up there with some combination of Charles, Louis, Corbett, Holmes.

Honestly, I don't think there is anybody in the sport as skilled and as natural as Jersey Joe.

To be honest, I think if he decided to fight risk-free like Mayweather, and didn't sustain any injuries like when he hurt his hand against Layne, he would have been undefeated.

He had the skills to do this, but he had killer instinct and took risks that sometimes led to him getting knocked out.

He was winning virtually every round against both Marciano and Louis before the KO.

The guy is a phenom. It's too bad that guys today are too scared to take risks.

Even against Charles, I think JJW was the more skilled guy in that fight because he managed to find *****s in Charles' armor.

Natural and skill aren't the same, though. Are they?

Walcott in that sense reminds me of Locche and Martinez. Just guys who boxing seemed to come so natural for... or maybe that made it look that way. Hence this whole discussion on skills versus ability. I tend to think Locche was more natural and skilled, but Walcott ain't bad of himself.

But Walcott was more than just a natural. He set people up and found their weaknesses.

With Charles, he saw when he jabbed there was an opportunity to land his left hook.

He walked Louis into countless right hands.

The guy was a master of using angles and creating openings. Locche was great at defense, but I don't think he brought the counterpunching and offensive arsenal that Jersey Joe Walcott brings.

Not to mention that while JJW may not be a HUGE puncher, he punches hard enough for any man to respect him.

Definitely. Walcott was a greatly skilled fighter. Interesting critique on Locche. But then again, he really didn't have much speed, and was basically a powder puncher. Your last sentence is more of an indication of ability and not skills, which is why I'm impressed with a guy like Locche.

Can anyone think of a better ALL AROUND fighter than Walcott. He's easily one of the greatest outside fighters of all time with his counterpunching skills and different looks, but he's shown on many occasions, namely when he knocked Lewis on his ass in the first fight and on the occasions where he brought the fight to Tien Hoff, that he has amazing short punches and inside skills.

This guy is boxing genius. The only guy that compares to him in modern times in my opinion is Hopkins, but honestly, I think Jersey Joe beats him in every category accept unwillingness to take risks.

I suppose you could say that was his downfall, though it led to more exciting fights. Jersey Joe wasn't satisified with a mere decision, he wanted to knock you out.

In the second Louis fight, I think this led to him being knocked out, especially considering many thought he was robbed the first night around.
