The hell happened to Tim Spoon in his '99 rematch with Greg Page?

Haven't seen the fight, but it's an interesting result considering Page was washed-up already in the mid-late-80s, yet Witherspoon was still a contender in December 1996 (when he fought Mercer).
Obviously Witherspoon went downhill quick after the Mercer bout, and even an old fat Page was capable of effective punching.
Or maybe 'spoon bet on Page !
A very meaningless tournament.

Never seen it, Witherspoon complained of a bad back but I've no idea how much of a reason that may have been. I guess Terrible Tim just really wasn't up for it, wheras Page (bless his heart & RIP) was a real true believer at the time in his boxing career.

Witherspoon put together a real nice run in the late nineties but had just been stopped in 4 by Brian Nielsen. That's pretty demoralising!

 

Pretty consistent to Spoons career overall just on a lower level. The guy was not the sharpest tool in the shed and he didnt seem to be motivated all the time. He could look great and then look like total crap all through his career.

 

He threw the fight to Nielson, just like all of Nielsons other high profile wins.

 

By the time two guys get to that stage in their life anything can happen. I wouldn't read too deeply into it.

 

Page probably wanted it more than Witherspoon, and probably, at least in his own mind, felt that the first fight was a fluke.

Sure Page won this fight, but it was sad to see either of them still fighting in '99. Holmes-Smith was even worse. Holmes was 50 years old and Smith was like 45. Page then fought some some tigers for Cedric Kushner and took more unecessary punishment and ultimately got brain damage from a ring injury. He should have retired for good after he lost to Seldon in '93. He'd still be here and probably relatively healthy.
