I was having a conversation with a buddy last night and the subject came up about how Marciano would do in the late 60's, early 70's era...

The general agreement was that he beats everyone but Ali, Foreman, possibly Liston and possibly Frazier. Chuvalo and Quarry and Bonavena are tough, probably tougher than most of his opposition was, but he gets by them...

Somehow Walcott got dragged into the era, and soon he was saying how it would be a big mistake for Shavers and/or Lyle to try and bang with Walcott...

I said that really, that's their only shot- Shavers definitely can't try to box with Joe and Lyle might try, and soon find out he aint winning that way, and resorts to banging.

He said those guys would be crazy to go shot for shot with Walcott, and I basically said that's their best chance...

Anyway, I mentioned I thought Walcott would do better against Ali than Marciano, and the conversation effectively ended because that was simply heresy...

What do the classic posters think? Was Walcott better suited to spoil Ali than Marciano?

Both lose in all likeleyhood, but what's the analysis between how the fights go?

Yeah. I don't think Ali ever fought against a fighter as defensively adept as Walcott.

IMO Ali-Marciano is a 50/50 fight. I think 70s Ali with his toughness, cageyness would actually do better than the 60s one, who looked a bit vulnerable and fragile compared to the 70s one.
Foreman-Marciano is a strange match-up. The Frazier fight is not a good template to judge this one. Marciano does not bob and weave like Frazier which played into Foreman´s hands big time. However, Foreman has a style and size advantage and he would make it count. It depends if Marciano really has as a good chin as I think he has. If he has, he survives Foreman´s onslought and get´s to him late when he gasses. If he doesn´t Foreman knocks him out.
Marciano-Frazier would be an awesome fight but I think Marciano takes it. I´m pretty confident with this pick too. Reasons are that Marciano´s left is better than Frazier´s right, Frazier´s defence beeing easier to figure out, Marciano´s better chin, Marciano´s better power. Frazier has size over him but that´s really it.
Ali-Walcott would be a good fight. I think again the 70s Ali would do better. 60s Ali would have a problem with Walcott´s combination of cuteness, power and experience. 70s Ali was more experienced and adepted better I think. However, Ali´s speed would win him this fight in the 60s, he would get of first and move away. Walcott troubles hum but loses. 70s Ali wouldn´t have the same speed advantage as 60s Ali but he would cut down many of the tricks of Walcott that would trouble 60s Ali due to knowing them.

when i saw ali-marciano is a 50/50 i didn't need to read any more.rocky would be lucky if he landed a punch on the peak 67' ali and would be hammered.he has nothing at all to trouble ali.nothing

You mean like Mildenberger? Or Wepner? Banks? Cooper? :huh

But yeah, it´s a good way to never have to rethink your own opinion by automatically dismissing and not even thinking about the ones you don´t agree with.

we can't even agree on what day it is so why start now:lol:ali was a young man the first time he fought cooper and when he boxed banks, old when he fought wepner and mildenberger was a novelty southpaw and that was all.
rocky defended his title against small, fat, old and past their best old, fat, small men.i will repeat, he would not stand a chance against ali.
ali probably boxed at least 4 men who would beat rocky

I think that Walcott would be an absolute stylistic nightmare for Ali.

I guess it depends what you mean by better. Ali's power probably would not bail him out late if ye were getting the worst of it on the score cards.

And you acuse us of living in a fantasy world.

A prime Ali did not exactly have an easy time against George chuvalo, and it is abundantly proven that he had issues with small pressure fighters.

If you think he is going to have an easy time with Marciano then you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

Walcott gave Marciano all he could handle. The only way Walcott does better again Ali, is if he actually beats him, and I don't think he does.
