Spoon, had a bad back and he admitted after the fight. Actually, the fight had more action then their first encounter.

I suspect I could beat Nielsen.

Spoon was aggressive and applied lotsa' pressure to the lazy Page in 1984... Spoon deserved the decision and WBC title in fight # 1...

Come 1999, Page was again a slob at 250, but boxed with a purpose against a lethargic Spoon...

I agree, I like both fighters, especially Spoon, he is one of my favorites. A prime inshape Spoon would give most HW champs in history a run for their money

I agree that an in-shape and focused Tim Spoon is most dangerous in any heavyweight era from 1887 to 2010.... Place his ass in a time machine when he's geared and motivated, and he does very well with all the greats...

Of course Holmes tried to win. You think he was bribed to lose? That would take a few armoured cars to get Holmes to agree to that. That fight was nowhere near the magnitude it would take to get Larry to play ball.

It's simply that Neilsen was not any good but he was still able to defeat an old version of Holmes. Neilesen's fights just mirror what happened later on with Valuev and it's a huge advantage being the house fighter.

Holmes-Nielsen was a nothing fight really. Nielsen got the decision because he was the hometown favorite. It shows that he was better than a Butterbean atleast, as he wasn't completely embarrassed by ancient Holmes.

Holmes was a professional fighter who was all about the money. I think it's entirely plausible that he'd take the an extra million to not try to win. It's not as if he was going to get a shot at Holyfield or Lewis, or that he'd particularly fancy one.

Having said that, I don't think Nielsen's people would necessarily feel they needed to bribe Holmes. I mean, Holmes wasn't knocking anyone out by this time, and was out-of-shape, almost 50, and reduced to fighting a few seconds each round.
I believe Holmes' fight with Maurice Harris was probably on the level, and Holmes was struggling with some poor opposition, so it was really not much of an achievement for Nielsen to win a disputed decision over him.

Stoppage wins over both Tubbs and Witherspoon are more suspicious.

I don't think Holmes would ever go into the tank... Holmes has great pride as a fighter...

Then why did he carry on fighting until he was a decrepit untrained grandfather with saggy jiggling tits ? :D

Point is, Larry Holmes went out a winner on the whole.... His last fight was a solid dec. win over "The Bean." Holmes only lost a couple of times between 1995 to 2002... Off my head, Holmes lost to "McCall & Nielsen." I voted for Holmes over Mo Harris in 1997.... Holmes is a winner, folks.....

I agree. I was just kidding.
But I wouldn't rule out any professional fighter going into the tank. I mean, all good fighters are winners, warriors, and have fighting pride. Still, we know some of them have played the game once or twice.

In heavweight championship fights from 1887 to 2010, I only believe that Sonny Liston and Bruce Seldon went into the tank back in '65 and '96... Both of those bouts stink to high heaven...

Myself, I've cleard Jack Sharkey in blowing his title to Primo Carnera back in '33... Carnera landed a couple of good shots to Sharkey prior to nailing him with a wicked uppercut in round 6 to end the night for Sharkey.... I taped the fight off ESPN a while ago and the KO looks legit to me....
