Bowe throwing the belt in the bin to avoid Lewis sticks out.

In recent times Povetkin refusing to fight Wlad, because he was "not ready".

If a fighter turns down a shot at a world title belt, or an existing belt holder throws his belt away to avoid the most lucrative fight out there.

"Duck" is used way too much on this forum however.

What if the guy is a smaller star than you, but the biggest test for you in the division, and makes the most financial sense?

The fighters that have said this pulled a duck.

"I'm looking to fight the Margarito-Cotto winner."

"I'm going to retire from boxing. I won't let boxing retire me."

"Easy fight, it would be an easy fight."

If anything, the opposite is more true? If everyone ahead just ducked the people behind then no-one would get anywhere.

Its a more shameful duck if someone who has the big name the fame, yet ducks a real threatening up and coming fighter or someone close to his own level.

A real duck is when a fight makes most sense financially and legacy-wise, and a fighter still finds a way to get out of the fight. See Bowe vs. Lewis, Haye vs. Klitschko, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

    Tavoris Cloud ducked Zsolt Erdei.
Cloud could have unified with Erdei but backed out, so as Erdei has the more impressive resume, so that makes Cloud a ducker?

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on a few things. First with what you call "running". He used his superior footwork to soto but it's not like he wasn't trading with him and consistantly coming out of the exchanges better. I didn't have that fight closer than 8-4. It was a strun and convincing win IMO. I knew who the better guy in the ring was that night and so did everyone else. It was a competitive fight but it was easy to see that Guzman was taking the rounds. Can't remember exactly how I scored It but I know it was easy to score. I do remember Guzman moving alot in the championship rounds when the fight was already in the bag.

Lastly, maybe Guzman wasn't exactly as fast as pac but he was very close and definately twice as fast as anyone pac has faced.

The way I see it, as long as guys remain in the sport, no particular status should come in the way of making the best possible fights. Therefore ducks should always be considered when the best possible fights can be made and aren't made because one of the two fighters refuses to fight...

For instance, if fighter A is the big draw and rated above fighter B which is his absolute best possible opponent, but fighter A instead elects to go the low risk / high reward route and fight fighter C or D or E, then it is a duck in my book !!

I love this post. Add Diacanu/Dawson and Aydin/Berto to that list.

Hopefully this will stop soon because Euro-level athletes are enjoying heightened presence in the sport, and they are increasingly becoming mandatories to American-level fighters. Eventually, these regional-grade professionals will have to either vacate or fight.

If you think I don't watch fights that don't involve Pac then you're completely wrong. I actually have tickets to Hopkins vs Pascal tomorrow. I've been to tons of fights live, but never to a Pac fight. I follow all of boxing. I've driven 7 hours and paid hundreds of dollars to see a fight that had nothing to do with Pac. I also bet on boxing pretty much every week.

Yes. He ducked 2 weight, p4p, undefeated, lineal light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei in favor of American-level journeyman Glen Johnson. As you mentioned, who would turn down an opportunrity for unification and lineal championship. Erdei is a Euro-level superstar. Surely there is no question as to whether or not this is a duck.

Are you certain that money, place and other things had nothing to do with cloud not fighting Erdei? Only an Idiot would go fight a sourland fighter in Germany regardless of where the guy is from. That's a sourland way of ducking fighters (come fight in germany). Yeah right, Not even Carl froch would fight a sourland fighter in germany and he was contracted to do so.

Don't say someone ducked someone without coming with the full story. I'm pretty sure the story is BS and that's why those who say he ducked never get into the details.
