This is a thought-provoking matchup because you have a guy with short, sharp, fast, and lethally hard punches against someone using awkward, incorrect, wide, heavy shots, not to mention using his head, laces, elbows, and generally roughhousing... Fullmer possessed the ugliest jab I've ever seen... That being said, to beat Fullmer, I believe you had to catch him with a hard punch he didn't see (possible for Jackson) or outbox him (also possible for Jackson). A quality that is essential for enduring what Fullmer brings is serious durability- something Jackson lacks. Either man could win, as their styles play into each other. I see Jackson boxing well enough, while getting roughed up enough to appear the loser, to stay in the fight long enough to time one of Fullmer's advances, Jackson catches him, and finishes him. I think Jackson is underrated, his prime was between McCallum and McClellan and he never really got his chance to shine in that time although he still had 2 elite wins maybe he could have done more than he did. He certainly has the power to KO anyone Fullmer included
I think Fullmer is underrated...he was more than just a mindless, knuclebruising, face-first primitive slugger..he showed the versatility he was capable of when he fought Fernandez, Basilio both times, and even in that draw with Tiger.he was capable of an awkward, crude, sort of homemade type of boxing technique..sort of like when Oscar Bonavena fought George Chuvalo...a definite "B" side to his more customary rough guy slugger approach. All this is to say that i think Fullmer would have used that same "B" side to gut it out and win a decision over the Hawk...never letting himself get clipped by the Hawk really severely, and roughing up and outhustling JJ for a 15 round decision. This distance was familiar territory for Fullmer whereas Jackson, in a feast or famine sort of way never traversed...and wouldn't have even if he was around in the old 15 round days. Fullmer would beat him much like he beat Florentino Fernandez. A rough, bruising experience for Jackson, and a few scares for Fullmer too along the way. I don't believe there would be any knockdowns..just as I said, a rough, bruising sort of fight with the superior strength of Fullmer persevering over the superior firepower of Jackson.
Remember Jackson never lost a decision. He either won by decision, or more often a KO happened one way or the other. Jackson folds under the pressure in the late rounds or he wins via decision or KO. The most unlikely scenario is him losing a decision. He didn't have the mentality of someone who wants to hear a judge's decision. He's going in to knock the other guy out, and he'll either be stopped trying or the other guy will survive. There are boxers I would imagine could decision Jackson, but Fullmer's style won't allow that here. I think someone will be stopped. More likely, it's Jackson doing the stopping.
Fullmer is too rugged, crude and hard-headed at 160 for the powerful, but chinny Jackson.... A great war that goes many rds, but ends with Jackson tired and hurt in his corner in round 13... Fullmer by TKO.... MR.BILL
Gimme Fullmer more often than not, but a Lausse like ten rounder would hardly surprise me either.Jackson does have the firepower and methodical steadyness of delivery and workrate to make gene think twice about just steaming in, but it would likely be closely contested even if Gene has to use his awkward mobility more than he would like.
I agree that J.J. has the power, even at 160, to make Eugene Fullmer think about being careless and rushing in without thought... SRR did park Fully with a hook in '57.... Jackson could hurt Fully, also.... :deal MR.BILL:hat
