Ok, I know most of us haven't seen any of Greb's fights but his record speaks for itself. We've seem a fair bit of footage of several of the men he defeated, so we know what he was capable of.

Any opinions on how he would probably fare against the heavyweight champions down the ages ?

For example, Dempsey, Schmeling, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer, Braddock, Louis ?
    Charles, Walcott, Marciano ....
    Patterson, Liston, Ali etc. etc.

Any match-ups you find particularly interesting ?

The most intersting one to me is Dempsey, because it could have and should have happened. I rather like Greb's chances over 10. Dempsey is the best champion I think he could perhaps beat.

It's disturbing though, isn't it, how many champions you have to give him a serious chance with? You can't make to many outlandish claims for reasons you've outlined, but who would lay money against his beating Braddock? Why couldn't he beat Baer, at least as many times as he can ditch that big right? If Walker can draw with Sharkey...and so on.

I think Greb can beat Sharkey, Perhaps Baer, Braddock, L Spinks and a few others.

I cant give Greb much chance againsts the GREATS like Louis or Ali or even Dempsey or Marciano. But than again who knows.

I would make Greb a favorite over Braddock and Sharkey among who you have listed. Isn't it amazing that you would have a middleweight champion who would be favored against some of the heavyweight champs?

    I agree, on all counts.

Even going up against Joe Louis, I don't have to try hard to come up with compelling reasons to consider him a real threat.

Greb was such an habitual winner, and it was almost the norm for him to win by "outclassing" even the most classy of opponents, you cannot write him off against many.

dpw, his name alone evokes greatness, but as you so well posted, we tend to forget Greb was only a MIDDLEWEIGHT. What other fighter in history at 160 lbs. , would we even contemplate him as an opponent against the top heavyweights ? The answer is NONE, because Greb had a UNIQUE style , never seen before, and never seen since ! Yes amazing indeed !

I feel Harold Greb loses to each dude you listed there... Greb challenging Jim Braddock would be my choice of match-making if I were handling Greb in a time machine... However, I see the "Cinderella Man" being too elusive and slick for the smaller, more rugged Greb... Braddock decs. Greb....

Braddock too elusive for Greb??? LOL thats one of the funniest things Ive ever heard. Someone hasnt watched Braddock get made to look absolutely stupid by Tommy Loughran.

WTF? Loughran is also one of the best 175 pounders of his era.... Still, even Tommy has his share of losses.... WTF?

I like Greb as much as any fabled fighter, and at 160, I rate Greb in my top-5... BUT! I don't think Greb is special when pitted against world class guys who are / were 175 pounds and above.... Tunney of '26 would batter Greb by a wide margin... As would guys like "Loughran and Braddock" would do to Greb in circa--'30 in a time machine....

    Note:

    Greb croaked in 1926....

    :lol::patsch

You're aware that Greb beat Loughran and 6 other world champions at Light Heavyweight, correct? His resume at Lt. Heavyweight is among the best of all time, just as it is at Middleweight. The man was even ranked among the top 10 Heavyweights for something like 7 years running, I believe.

Face it, Bill. You just don't know what the hell you're talking about.

**** you, dickhead.... Thomas Loughran was pretty green prior to 1926 for Christ sake..... Greb was primed in the early 1920s, and was still capable in 1925.... By 1926, Greb was going blind cuz of retina problems, etc... Greb kicked-off later in the year on the doc's table undergoing surgery for his eyes and nose....

He'd been half-blind well before 1925. His prime was around 1919, when he still had two working eyes. The fact that he was still "capable" in the early to mid 20's is a testament to his greatness and nothing else. As for Loughran being green prior to '26, I don't know about that. He'd been readily mixing it up with the best available fighters around Middle and Lt. Heavy for the past 3-4 years, and had had fights with the likes of Tunney, Bogash, McTigue, Clark, Delaney, Smith, Wilson, Carpentier and multiple goes at Greb. That doesn't sound like the resume of a green fighter to me.

It's clear you haven't done the basic research necessary to even leave fly-by comments on Greb, and yet you make statements like you're some kind of authority figure. It's laughable.
