Loughran turned pro at basically age 17 in 1919... Loughran had only been pro four yrs by 1923 when he was decisioned by Greb, who was well seasoned that year of '23 and still very viable, regardless of what was happening to his vision... Hell, Loughran also dropped some decisions to Young Stribling back in the day, but that doesn't hinder Loughran's legacy... WTF? Again, **** off......hi: MR.BILL:hat
True indeed, Burt and it is nice to hear from you. I saw that you said hello to me a while back, but did not see it until way after the fact. I responded to you, but I think it was too late. I hope you have been doing well and keep on teaching us about the legendary Harry Greb. Take care, B.B., I hope to hear from you soon.
C'mon.... Jim Braddock was a poor man's champion from 1935 to 1937, but he knew how to stick, move and box... And being around 182 pounds as a heavy, he would be one tuff dog for the 160 pound Greb... Greb would have his hands full with Braddock in A TIME MACHINE!! MR.BILL:bbb:hat
Gotta say, when I clicked on this the last name I thought I was going to read as being the threat to Greb was Jim ****ing Braddock
I never said Jim Braddock was a major threat to Greb... I said Braddock is a good match for Greb and a viable opponent in a time machine.... I was simply trying to make a heavyweight match for Greb with a champion at heavyweight in which the fight would have sustained action on fairly equal terms and given the fans some rds of good boxing... Nothing more; nothing less... I'm sorry some posters missed the initial point posted...... MR.BILL
If Braddock of 1935 could out-box the jiving and powerful Baer for the title and hang tuff in dropping Joe Louis in Chicago come his 8th rd. KO loss of the title, he sure as hell could hang in there with a 160 pound Harry Greb for the sake of Amon Ra...... MR.BILL
First of all Braddock was one of, if not THE, weakest HW champs in history, forget the fact that he was fighting in one of the weakest HW/LHW eras which is saying a lot. He was absolute ****. What in his record of 26 losses makes you think he would have beaten Greb, who in more than 3 times as many fights, against far better competition, managed a much better win/loss ration? Second, his win over Baer was very close so lets not make it out like that was a one sided fight by any means. It is well known that the Braddock win over Baer had a lot more to do with Baer taking Braddock lightly than anything Braddock was capable of. Finally, when Loughran and Greb met for the first time Loughran had already had over 40 fights, many against guys who would be ranked in the top ten (if such rankings existed at the time, and had already defeated Downey (who at that point should have been the legit MW champ) and McTigue (who would win the LHW championship within a year). You are, I hope, aware that Greb won their series correct? You are also aware that Greb dominated Rosenbloom, knocking him down, and carrying him to the finish correct? You are aware that Rosenbloom beat Braddock right? In fact of their three common opponents, Loughran, Slatter, and Rosenbloom, the only one Braddock managed to beat was Slattery. Greb beat Slatytery when he was in his prime, not when he was a drunk fighting for booze money as was the case when Braddock beat him. I think someone has been watching too many Russell Crowe movies.
Dont back track now. You said that Braddock would be too slick (which is laughable) and would decision Greb. How is that not a threat?
Think what you care to, Klomp....... At least I have film footage of Jimmy Braddock to judge... I can't say the same about the still photos' of Greb... :hi: MR.BILLhat
Yeah and he looks like **** in the film footage that exists of him. When he was supposedly in his prime Loughran made him look like a complete novice, worse than an amateur, Against Baer he barely won the title against a guy who was completely disinterested, against Louis he got slaughtered (hang on to that KD all you want), and against Farr he got a gift decision. I dont need footage of Greb to know he would have fared better.
But surely Greb is one of the greatest light-heavyweights ever ?!? He WAS special against world class 175-pounders, that's pretty much the story of his 300 fight career. I can't see any grounds for you claim to the contrary. It's "flat earth society" stuff.
Not only do we have zilch in terms of footage of Greb, but now we have him pitted against some heavyweight champions...amazing.
