tnks burt Sam Taub razed holy hell the morning after the Greb vs Tunney rematch....Harry Greb got the tar end of the stick last night at Madison Square Garden he won 10 out if the 15 rounds!!
For dpw http://news.google.co.uk/newspapers...2,913437&dq=tommy+loughran+micky+walker&hl=en This has Loughran rating Walker as Greb's equal as the 'finest combination box and sock artist.' Only thing I can find in Google News
Gibberish from a guy who has no understanding of the history of boxing. Harry was barnstorming vs these dudes fulfilling his mottos "A fight a week makes the bank roll speak"/"Why should i pay sparring partners when i can get paid for fighting them"? Ali was the last barnstorming champion vs Blinn-Lubbers ect
SL, i have read over these long years, that many writers thought that the fading Greb, got the best of the RISING, Gene Tunney in their rematch. Can you picture a fading Marvin Hagler, taking on a rising Ezzard Charles, spotting Ezzard 10-15 pounds to boot ?. And maybe winning ! Hard to envision the match even being made at all ... My point being Greb did this so often that today we take these heroic things for granted, so amazing was Greb !!:good
http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...IBAJ&pg=3941,83932&dq=given-him-by-carpentier First i saw that. Usually he's adamant about Greb= Greatest as he is here. He did in a Ring Mag interview around 1947 and stressed it BIG TIME.
This was good too...Loughran seemed very forthrightand direct with his opinions. He fought them all...Interesting he said that Carpentier gave him such a tough go.
The people who argue for advances in boxing (you know who you are) would presumably pick Greb over Sullivan, Corbett, Fitz, Jeffries, Johnson. If you can fancy Bob Foster's chances against Jack Dempsey, then you must be able to stretch to that!
He said something like Carpentier had all the tools, just no chin. There's a story i love in that book. Walker tells that he and Greb had been out on the champagnes after their bout, at the end of the night they're walking home and they get into an argument which results in Walker knocking Greb out cold in the street. Its a gem of a little story, cant help but chuckle every time i think of it.
Hey Bugger. Yes, it's a gem, but it's just that- a story. Like the Papke supposed "sucker punch" on Ketchel during the Ref's instructions or the Cassius Clay "extra time to get new gloves" incident during the Cooper fight, it never happened. Walker was nowhere near Greb after the fight that night. As you probably already know, Boxing is replete with myths that are handed down from generation to generation. With it's easy access to facts and information the internet generation is slowly puncturing holes in these myths, one by one.
