I've just watched the Marquez/Pacquiao II & i've got it 5-5-2, i can't seperate them on the 1st & 11th.
For me, i only score a round 10-8 if there is a kd. Consider this- Two fights are going on at the same time, In Ring 1, Fighter A is beating the **** out of fighter B. Fighter B goes down. In Ring 2, Fighter C is beating the **** out of fighter D, fighter D stays upright. In my opinion, Fighter D deserves his 9 points. I know i'll proabably be outnumbered on that viewpoint i have, but i'm never going to change it. I've had the conversation countless times and nobody has ever convinced me to score a round 10-8 against a fighter who doesn't go down in that round.
I have scored that fight, i can't remember it now, it was very very close but i did give every round to somebody. Please don't make me re-score it.
It puzzles and frustrates me that they haven't come up with a better scoring system than the very flawed 10 point must. Example: Fighter A pummels Fighter B for the first round, but deosn't score a knockdown and doesn't quite get a 10-8, so it's 10-9. Fighter B barely knicks the second round. So the fight is even? That's bull****. So I take some artistic license (such as awarding Pascal a 10-9 round instead of 10-8) to make things more reasonable. Pascal lost that fight clear on my scorecard anyway even with two 10-8's and I was rooting for the guy. Hopkins dictated the fight, was the better ring general, threw more meaningful punches, landed far more punches, he won the fight.
So if fighter C is beating the **** out of fighter D for 6 rounds (total domination, like punching a bag, but without KDs), then he is winded and fighter D takes the other 6 rounds by slight margin, you would score the bout a draw? Consider that fair?
What's "throwing meaningful punches"? It Tua or Shavers throw a lot of terrible hooks, but don't land them, do they get an advantage for this? On the other hand, if Tua lands a hook that almost knocks his opponent out (but he doesn't fall), and in return received 5 light jabs, does his opponent get an advantage for being a general and landing far more punches?
Yes i would score it a draw, and yes i think it would be fair. If we're going to do it on a basis of who does the more damage then why not just let them have a no holds barred street fight?
I take your point, but I think in this case it's moot because I felt like Hopkins landed more anyway................By meaningful, again I thought that Hopkins dictated the action, and was the only guy in the ring with a gameplan. I felt like Pascal fought a very negative fight. It wasn't so much counterpunching as it was just retreating IMO. In addition to all this, it seemed to me as if Hopkins was the bigger, stronger fighter.
landing more = points for clean punching dictating the action = points for ring generalship having a gameplan = zero points fighting a negative fight = zero points retreating = zero points being bigger and stronger = zero points
I thought the decision was pretty accurate but the scoring wasnt. I had the fight very close. Hopkins dictated the pace after three or four but I felt with the knockdowns and the bigger power shots Pascal landed throughout the fight made it pretty even. The knockdowns were legit in my opinion. If a fighter leans into a power shot and gets hit on the back of the head in the process and goes down, its legit. I dont believe Pascal fouled in anyway, hes just a fairly unorthodox fighter that throws wide and loopy punches and the shots were a combination of Hopkins leaning into them a bit. That being said, I think Pascal fought completely the wrong fight. He didnt need to backpedal and counterpunch, he just needed to throw more punches and be mobile side to side and use the larger ring to his advantage. His corner was giving him poor advice, Hopkins isnt much of an offensive threat at LH, so he should have pressured behind his jab and boxed more side to side and could have won a comfortable decision, hes much quicker than Hopkins.
Because it is 10 point must it would be a 10-10 round. the Only time it would be a 9-9 round is if it was point deduction instead of the KD. Interesting point, never thought of it like that. Personally I score 10-8 rounds without KD's though. What else could there be? If you make it any more artistic boxing would only get more and more controversial. These things though complement and help you achieve the top two things.
