b-hop ducked calzaghe in 2002 according to jay larkin; so you're wrong. when rjj moved up to lightheavy joe was the british champion & hadn't even signed with frank warren. if rjj was chasing novice domestic level british fighters in 1996 then he is a massive *****. but he wasn't and you are just talking bollocks. :good
Good boxer, great work rate, 20 defenses, 2 weight champ. Respect to Joe. However he didn't achieve quite enough to be counted amongst the very best in the sport. He didn't always fight the best opposition and he didn't have enough big fights. Hopkins will out achieve him and Jones already has. Joes best moments were Eubank, the gutsy win over Kesler and the exposure of Lacy. A younger B Hop and a pre heavyweight Jones would have been quite different fights. As it was he struggled to best an aging B Hop and he could not stop a shot, chinny Jones where lesser fighters had scored a total knockout. Don't forget an old B Hop and a shot Jones both decked Joe in the first round! Joe should have fought on and went after guys like Dawson, Tarver, Johnson and Pascal. If he had beaten these guys too his legacy would look far more impressive.
calzaghe`s career resume should have been so much better, that it was not was down to 3 things warren himself injury`s. IMO he was a better fighter aged 34 and slipping in a bit of speed and power than he was in his physical prime which would have been 20 to 30. calzaghe losing his power due to bad hands , and he did have very good power when he was younger , IMO made him a better all around fighter. calzaghes punching style when you slow it down , in loads of fights was unasthetic on the eye and put him in with a spoiler with a good chin and the fight turned into an ugly borefest. but so many detractors focus only on his ugly unorthodox punching technique. why calzaghe was so hard to fight for his opponents was because of his sheer adaptabilty in the ring, especially as he got older and more mature. he had very fast hands /fast feet /huge workrate/could outbox a boxer/outbrawl a brawler/outspoil the spoiler/outhustle the hustler/ was not afraid to get hit/could box of the back and front foot on the outside and liked it in the pocket, /loved a war / he was not great at any one thing, but as a whole package at his weightclass he was and would have been very hard man to beat as he proved in his career. but he should be marked down for his resume , at least 10 defenses were against c class cannon fodder when there was no need whatsoever to protect him.
Yeah, I don't dispute that. I that case Johnson was the away fighter for every single one of his fights. I'm not criticizing Calzaghe, just pointing out that bailey was incorrect. He fought Will McIntyre in Denmark for some reason.
first off numnuts i never mentioned frank warren as his promoter and in 2002 hopkins was the undisputed middleweight champion he wasnt at calzaghes weight yet an in 96 calzaghe was a 22-0 world title contender he was a "novice domestic level british fighter" he got his title shot in 97 against eubank who was an easier target then jones who was the ibf champion in 96 and calzaghe also didn want to fight roy at light heavy when roy had every belt in the division
no...you didn't mention warren...i merely brought it up cos it shows that calzaghe was still a prospect as he didn't even have a proper promoter. by the time rjj fought maccallum calzaghe was 19-0 (not 22-0) & defending his british title against pat lawlor at a leisure centre in cardiff & still hadn't even signed with warren who got him his wbo title shot over a year later (which was his first fight at world level). he was never on rjj's radar in 1996. you are talking bollocks. but please feel free to prove me wrong. show me some evidence that rjj was calling a completely unknown british domestic champion out in 1996. then i can call rjj a ***** (which i would enjoy). sadly i suspect you can't tho. rjj & calzaghe did not "nearly fight" in 1996. you are wrong. so shut up & **** off with your bull****. :hi:
