He fought Winky in 2007 when he was 35 years old at a catch weight of 170 pounds. Something Winky has never did and never will do again. He wasn't proven at that weight before thaht fight the highest weight class he fought at was Middleweight, but he was a natural Light Middleweight. If Hopkins could have beat him at Middleweight it could have been a great win, but it wasn't. I personally rate Hopkins win over Oscar higher because at least De La Hoya was proven at Middleweight by his fight against Sturm. Even though I thought he lost that fight, he put up a good fight. This is how I rate his wins. 1. Felix Trinidad 2. Antonio Tarver 3. Kelly Pavlik 4. Glen Johnson 5. Jean Pascal :yep (he won this god damn fight) 6. Oscar De La Hoya 7. John David Jackson 8. WINKY WRIGHT
I don't have a problem with that order, it seems about right. Trinidad is the only good win there though. The rest are just mediocre scalps.
What did Oscar prove in the Sturm fight other than how to get his ass handed to him? Winky was a better fighter at 170 than DLH was at middleweight, but that said, I don't think Hopkins even beat Winky. Had it a draw.
How was Oscar proven at MW by his fight against Sturm The only thing Oscar proved against Sturm is that he wasn't serious about boxing anymore.
It's a good win, but far from his best. If memory serves, the bookmakers actually had Hopkins was the underdog here (as he has been for nearly five years straight, sans the Ornelas and Jones fights) but sensible fans thought the bigger better and craftier (yes, craftier) man would win. He really ought to have been the favorite heading in.
Its alway nice to have a fighter like Winky Wright on your resume or victims list, but Bernard Hopkins fought him out of his element as he did with Kelly Pavlik. Wins like that have to be placed in perspective, was it an impressive name to beat, yeah, but he can't get the full fledged credit of beating Winky Wright. In all seriousness I completely forgot about that fight, mainly because it was boring just like most Bernard Hopkins fights. I love to watch is mastery but sometimes its far from entertaining.
