In my opinion Calzaghe had the best possible style to beat Hopkins via pressure and work-rate. How bad it looked fools people I think.

It's often said these are the keys to beating an old Hopkins, but any average pressure is taken to the cleaners because it presents so many opportunities. Calzaghe's work-rate came from such a high level that even when Hopkins cut it down it was still at 600 as Beeston says. That was key to tiring Bernard down. Calzaghe was also far more willing than most to throw 5 punches to land 1, and was willing to come through the counterpunches without being discouraged. He knew if he threw a 3 punch combo he'd probably miss so by pumping out punches by any means he occupied Hopkins and sneaked them through, and tired him out. Calzaghe's footwork was also key to closing Hop off. Calzaghe's footwork is under appreciated, he's one of the few that could compete with Hopkins in this department. The handspeed and unorthodox style wouldn't have hurt either.

Calzaghe did a very under appreciated nights work. It's not easy to beat Hopkins coming forward, its not the ideal style if you were making a fighter to defeat Bernard.

 

The footwork is the key for me.

Contrast the fights with Calzaghe and Hopkins - one had the footwork to get within range and at an angle to prevent the opportunity for the right hand counter.... whereas the other just followed Bernard around and took a beating.

Pavlik's output is usually around 60-70, but against Hopkins it was below 50. The primary element of Hopkins' gameplan is to take away the strength of his opponent, which he usually manages easily.

Against Calzaghe he still did it, but not with the usual success.

 

Calzaghe & Hatton are two Brits with underrated footwork. Nobody talks about that on their list of strong points. I was surprised when Roach said Hatton had poor footwork. Margarito has poor footwork, Hatton is actually very light on his feet. For what he intends to achieve which is to get close and hit the body it was excellent. Upper body movement and guard - not so good.

 

Calzaghe is so unorthodox he had B-Hop sturggling to place his feet for his combos, let alone get them off and circle.

McGrain did a fantastic stylistic analysis on the Classic where he evaluated Calzaghe being unorthodox Vs Hopkins being textbook. Search it u[ iof you can be arse, Im wrecked

Hopkins is a master; Greb would have had a stunted workrate against him, that I promise you(even if he would;'ve won, whihI also promise)

 

As I've said a hndred times, Jo C was not great, buit ghe had a formidable syle. I you forc B-Hp to be like dat then you hav onw awkward style.

Eough to beat Saad, Conteh, Spinks, Foser? Hell P!!!! But to force od man Hpkins to be more cagey tan you've ever seen? Man, Joe C was hard to fight.

They were overrating his body punching, which has been average at best since moving into world class barring the Castillo fight, and underrating the feet.

He had no trouble closing the gap on Pacquiao and creating the angles..... but then threw punches that needed a postage stamp, and thus easy to get away from.

 

Exactly that; Hatton has world-class footwork, super-quick to close the gap. Just not much when he got there (post-5000 Guiness anyway)

 

Agreed. He was wild, reckless, open, stupid, naive, plenty of other things but the fact is he did get close enough to let his shots go.

So right about Hatton. He did have good feet with his nice hop and step, he's also underrated for his insane tempo. His problem was his lack of defense and burning himself out.

Great pressure fighters are rare, it's why i admire the type of pressure Calzaghe put on Hopkins, it was sort of similar to what Castillo was doing to Floyd. Calzaghe and Castillo realised they had to reverse the mental pressure, not just hoping their opponent gets tired because they're fighting harder. They understood the importance in presence when pressuring. People also underrate how physically strong Joe was.
