JOHN SIMPSON has agreed to a rematch with Martin Lindsay after ripping the British featherweight title away from the Ulsterman. And his manager has backed him to do the business again. Super Simmo stunned Lindsay and the King's Hall crowd when he produced the fight of his life in Belfast on Wednesday night to win the Lonsdale Belt outright. The 27-year-old Greenock ace earned a unanimous points win after defying the odds to inflict a first career defeat on his rival, whose right eye was completely closed over by the end. Now Simpson is set to venture back into the lion's den after manager Alex Morrison struck a lucrative deal with promoter Frank Maloney. The Glasgow fight boss revealed: "We have already agreed terms for John to give Lindsay a rematch in the first week of March, if he wants it. "John was all for it when he heard what he is getting for making a first defence back in Belfast because he's on really good money. "But even if Lindsay doesn't take the fight John will still top the bill. "Maloney was so confident that Lindsay would win he had already booked the King's Hall for his next two defences. "I am personally very confident that John will do the same to Lindsay again after he produced one of the best performances I have seen from a Scottish fighter. "It reminded me in many ways of Ricky Burns against Roman Martinez. "Every time he was stung by Lindsay John bounced straight back. "He could have won even more convincingly had he not let Lindsay off the hook a couple of times. "But I believe there is much more to come from John, because he doesn't take many punches. "I'd hope that he would fight for the European and maybe a world title beyond Lindsay, but right now I am very proud to have a world champion and a British champion in my stable." Simpson described it as the defining moment of his career and said: "I fought as well as I knew I was capable of doing and performed the way I do in the gym. "I did the weight properly and cut back on training. I think sometimes in the past I have perhaps over-trained. "My trainer Billy Nelson gave me a few days off here and there and that worked, I felt fresh during the fight. "Lindsay didn't want to know after I hurt him early on and even though he started to come forward more in the eighth round I was too sharp for him. "I caught him several times with rights over the top and left hooks to the body and I could see those shots had hurt him. "After what happened to Paul Appleby in Belfast when I think he was intimidated by the crowd, it made it an even bigger fight for me. "To have gone there and taken the title off a really good boxer in his own backyard makes me very proud. It was definitely the best win of my career." Cornerman Nelson added: "John listened to me for nine weeks and took on board everything I told him." lads i saw on the general forum that tim bradley wont be paying the wbc sanctioning fees, so if he beats alexander, instead of winning the wbc belt, it will become vacant, so how highly ranked is paul mccloskey by the wbc? cos i believe a vacant title is his only way of getting a shot
McCloskey is #4 as far as I remember. Olusegun fights Chebah in Jan in a WBC eliminator. So hopefully McC can fight the winner of that for the vacant title please God :good
Yeah big time should have been stopped there have been tons of fights stopped for less .Bute has fought out of Canada once as a pro I guess he doesn,t want to leave that safe haven if he was in another country that he wasn't so highly touted in that fight would have been stopped he was banjoed. found this on the scene page By Rick Reeno ***********.com was advised by multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is currently without a dance partner for his scheduled HBO televised return on March 12. Martinez had initially planned to honor his mandatory obligation with interim-champion Sebastian Zbik. HBO had no interest in purchasing Martinez-Zbik. The next option was Andy Lee, but the network is also resistant to that idea. A deal appeared to be close for a fight between Martinez and unbeaten WBO 154-pound champion Sergei Dzinziruk. An overseas source told *********** that there was miscommunication between the promoters and HBO on the exact amount of the licensing fee, and as a result the proposed deal fell into limbo.
Strange thinking from HBO given time of year and the lack of other candidates willing to come forward. Its tough on Andy to miss out on this opportunity, but ultimately it could be a blessing, I think he needs one or two strong bouts at Euro level or top ten alphabets before he goes for a belt. Andy has time on his side and the rest of the division is getting older.
