Roy Jones Jr or Julio Cesar Chavez

Id say he won the title, Ruiz was an established heavyweight champ so I think he was a proven titliest. Realistically noone thought Jones Jr could compete with Lennox Lewis and Lewis wouldnt fight Ruiz, who was proving and went on to prove he could give a lot of fighters trouble.

 

Ruiz wasnt the real champ no, but effectively he was the number 1 challenger after winning the series with Holyfield. Many supposed great wins, weren't for 'the real championship either', ie when Duran beat Barkley he wasn't the real champ, just the weakest titlist in the division

 

Off the top of my head it was 3 from, Nunn, McCallum, Kalambay, Nigel Benn

 

Ruiz was a proven contender. Jones beat him. That´s what he did at hw. I don´t rank belts at world titles. Belt holders are the top contenders and challengers for a championship. IMO a belt today is about as much worth as a the European championship or Commonwealth championship 40, 0 and so on years ago. I stated this point of view many times.

Like said before, Jones beat a proven contender. Yes, Duran never was the mw champion but that win is not significant because it was for the belt because he beat the man who beat the man who was the only one who knocked him out brutally when he was still a force. And of course because Barkley was about twice as big and ended up fighting at hw while Duran started out as a fw.

After that fight Barkley fought Nunn for the IBF crown, and lost, and then Benn for the WBA one, and lost too. The WBO was insgnificant back then, perhaps I mixed up the belts but I remember that he faced Hearns, Duran, Nunn and Benn in a row for all three major belts at mw. Then moved up to lhw, then down to smw to win a belt, then to lhw to beat Hearns for a belt, then back to smw to lose his belt to Toney. He was quite a force back then, not the very best, not great but certainly a force.

 

You really should watch Kalambay, one of the most skilled boxers of recent times. There is a bit on youtube about him.

Going by the names that was a great mw era. Sadly, most of them didn´t fight each other.

 

Jones is better.
1. Jones is the better boxer in terms of skills/abillites/talent.
2. Jones is the best head to head at 168 & 175 and top 10 if not top 5 head to head at 160. Chavez is top 5 head to head at 130 and top 10 at 135.
3. Jones championships at 160,168,175 & heavy =4. Chavez Championships at 130, 135 & 140 =3.

 

There is so much wrong here, I don´t know where to start so, I just say: NO!

 

Came up short? At least Chavez was never sprawled out on the canvas, like he had been shot! in fact he finally was dropped against Randall after almost ninety something odd fights. Facing some of the heaviest hitters in the lower divisions. Even DeLa Hoya couldn't drop Chavez late in his career.

 

but at least jones never quit in his corner. almost every great fighter was stopped at some point in their careers. again, jones > chavez.

Yeah but you cant call that way. Ruiz never got the opportunity to face Lewis because Lewis didnt want to fight him. He was a heavyweight champion in my mind and did enough to prove it.

 

Of course I can. But yeah of course he was a hw champ in your eyes, like in the eyes of all Jones-fans. However, this is not correct.
