Willie, who had an almost pathological aversion to getting hit and getting his face messed up...when he was "on", was a beautiful boxer..he would have posted wins over both Pascal of Hopkins.

Red, are you basing your prediction of Willie over B Hop mostly from the Harold Johnson fight? I don't disagree, but im interested in your reasoning because I think Hopkins is a much different kind of fighter than Johnson.

Yessir, Johnson and Hopkins differ, but within the parameters of being clever technicians...both were the type fighter that pastrano looked good against.and I've always suspected that a fast moving, mobile boxer who has zero interest in trading and slugging would give Hopkins fits and beat him. Fast hands, a pinpoint accurate jab and tireless legs would supply Willie with what he needed to beat Hopkins, IMO.

that makes sense to me. it's true, hopkins does a lot better against come forward types of fighters. but i do belive hopkins wouldnt have been as dumbfounded as johnson facing pastrano. hopkins adapts very well in the ring. i can't see him trying the same failing strategy over and over in a fight.

Apparently you didn't see the Jermain Taylor fights, then.

You're not bugging me my man:good..what I meant was that both guys were technicians, no matter how they happened to differ within this definition..Hopkins dosen't outclass Johnson in this regard as Harold has always been considered the archetypical technician..quite masterful in his technical approach in the ring, whereas Hopkins, though masterful himself, has benefitted by fighting in a less distinguished era, and therefore looks good in contrast to his opposition. How many equally big, clever boxer/technician types has hopkins had to deal with? Trinidad? A shot Roy Jones? Kelly Pavlik? A smallish Winky Wright? This no talent Pascal he fought the other night? Compare them to Johnson's peers: Moore, Persol, Jones, Machen, Cotton, Marshall, Pastrano, just to name a few.

he was never really hit in those fights and stepped it up in the later rounds. Most people belive he beat Taylor in the first one at least if not both.

Funny reading this theorizing 'bout Willie in various threads. Like a guy ya grew up with who becomes a famous surgeon, 'n ya think, NO WAY would I let that dumb ass operate on me.

At the 5th Gym, Willie was a pudgy clown, a bouncing, slapping 24/7 tail- chaser -- same as Willie Pep.
