stephen smith is a very good fighter and a real nice guy as well along with his family, swifty also has great taste in shirts lol! a fight with john may happen down the line i certainly hope so.
Simpson is a throwback, hard as nails and works as hard as he can. I was rooting for him big time and he pulled it off. Deserved the decision against the completely average (on that night anyway considering the hype) Stephen Smith IMO as well (although of course he has time to improve, seems to like hugging instead of punching like his Bro', though you can hardly blame him for not wanting to trade with Simpson :yep) and I think it was close and a rematch needs to happen. Hopefully Smith will show us more from his bag of tricks, I'd be a little deflated if that was the only gear he had. That's the re-match we have to see first. Get Lindsay to re-match Derry Matthews (don't forget he got floored by him, needed a hail mary to win IMO and he managed it) and then have the winners fight each other. Domestic 126 is good at the moment, more interesting than Elite-level 130 IMO.
I personally did'nt think it was that close, although I seem to be missing in a round here.... smith simpson simpson smith (close) simpson simpson simpson simpson (very close, Simpson may have stole it) smith simpson simpson Simpson's lead right, his inside uppercuts, his body work in the clinches. Smith had success from range but in the mid part of the fight he was too negative, and got out fought on the inside.
I had Simpson winning by one round. So i woukd have had no argument with Simpson beating smith. I think smiths performance in the end which has been described by a few people on here owed much to the fact his hand was ****ed. I think we could get a good series of fights out of these three. Simpson v smith, winner to fight Lindsay again.
Your spot on mate, Although i respect he damaged his hand and was in with a european level grizzled warrior in Simmo but all he did was maul and hold and cuff his way to a decision. Really frustrating tbh... The way people built him up beforehand who saw him i was expecting a classy boxer not a hit and holder.
I would like to see how Smith Lindsay would go man .Good fight probably .That was a quality turn around of the career man Simpson .Good move man he made to Billy Nelson's gym I read .I read that's why Appelby isn't showing his best bacause he needs a good pro trainer .I think Appelby's got the tools he just needs a move man .
Yep Appleby lacked basic understanding against Layrea....kid didn't even know he could slip or parry the jab. One of the most un-educated performances i seen from a British fighter in a while.
Yeah I couldn't believe there was talk of him potentially being capable of fighting for world honours one day, he is no where near that standard imo.
I kinda felt that Lindsay fight might of played a part in why he looked so bad, as he seemed to be trying to fight a more cautious fight and seemed to be curbing his natural instinct to be aggressive, only his ticket to beat Layrea would of been not staying outside and getting caught on the tail end of his punches where by he couldn't get any counter punching going, but to back Layrea up, got to the body and put some combination's together. When Appleby did put his shots together though, he seemed to fall in a little to much which made it easier for Layrea to roll or slip his punches imo. I hope Appleby can come again, I'd sooner see he or Simpson succeed, than a mugger like Smith.
I think people need to put smith into perspective. A green 10 fight pro who held his own with a broken hand against what people on this thread are calling a rugged euro level fighter. Not bad progress IMO. I was saying during the fight though that you could tell smith was an inexperienced pro, as there was no fightfrom him going into or coming out of the clinches which he can only learn by having more fights. I am sure smith would be looking to show what he is capable of with two working hands! Simmo however has turned a dew heads by beating Lindsay, so like I said this trio could bring us some exciting domestic fights in the coming year. I would reserve judgement on swifty being a mugger though gooners
What annoyed me with Apps is fact he hurt Layrea in round 2 when he went and sustained an attack to the body but he always wanted to get back out to long range for some unknown reason. It wasn't that hard to get to Layrea's body but Apps just didn't seem to have a understanding of what to do to turn the tide. Your right i think the Lindsay fight has affected him mentally. He does have a bit of ability but i like to see what Billy Nelson could do with the lad. Billy seems to work wonders with them lads up there. Simpson looks better and better.
I think myself and Gooners have acknowledged that Avid but when people before the fight talk of him being our best prospect and heading for world honors i was really underwhelmed by the performance. I know he broke his hand and was in deep but he didn't shine for him even before the hand break and never wanted to work. Gooner's scoring of the fight was spot on IMO. He never wanted to work on the inside...he negated so much holding which pissed me off.
To me Smith showed technical limitations that had less to do with his lack of experience, and more to do with his fundamentals.
Yeah now you mention it, I recall that now, forgot that he hurt him to the body. Yeah that guy Billy Nelson seems to get his boys fired up to, that was probably two back to back performances where his fighters fought the fight on their lives. I was so glad Simpson won, I really like Simpson, he's a tough SOB with underrated Boxing skills, would be interesting to see what he would of been like with more power and a few more inches in height and reach.
Yeah i agree, Simmo not only pressure and bullied Lindsay but he effectively boxed against him. It was relentless but very smart pressure with educated attacks and even at times he'd lean back from Linday's work and counter back. He's really come on leaps and bounds. It's frightening to think he can go down to SBW.
