Pascal: "Close rounds should always be given to the champion"

In a recent interview, Pascal is quoted as saying that he feels that when a round is close, it should be given to the champion.

I find that this view is held among many people. It is widely accepted. But its ridiculous, of course. The scoring of a round should not be affected one iota by who the "champion" is.

The scoring of a round should depend on who did better in the round.

As it happens, the judges in Montreal evidently agree with Pascal. After all, he was awarded all (or nearly all?) of the close rounds.

 

I dont see close rounds after 4 in that fight.

 

This notion, is a ridiculous one. It basically means the champion can get away with doing less.

I remember a lot of people justifying kesslers win over froch with that statement:think

 

Pascal should be happy with the result.

 

It's like "tie goes to the runner" in baseball.

Whoever started these ideas should be shot.

 

Well, they're right. It's the person's perfomance in that round which should be considered, not his champion status.

Also, it seems that nowadays this rule isn't just applied to champions. The more popular and marketable fighter is often favoured in close rounds, too.

If Pascal was a politician he would be a dictator who last won an election over 25 years ago.

 

What gets me is the people that make a big deal out of "tie goes to the runner". It makes me think that person doesn't really know much, but heard something once that he thought would make him sound knowledgeable if he said it.
Although those words are not found in the baseball rulebook, it is a true statement.

The rule says (and I'm paraphrasing here) the ball or tag (depending on the situation) must beat the runner to the base or plate.
That means if the ball or tag arrives simultaneously with the runner, the runner is safe.

Sorry for the non-boxing post, but one of my pet peeves is people who say "tie goes to the runner" is one of their pet peeves.

 

Close rounds should be given to the champion? That's like saying if there's a close finish in Horse Racing, instead of going to a Photo finish, just give it to the favourite. Its daft, stupid! Pascal has mugged himself right off with such a statement!

I'm pretty sure he will.

Pascal might have lost that fight in a lot of people's view. But he's no ducker.

Just look at his resume.
