Joe Calzaghe vs Antonio Tarver

I know Imma get hate for this, but imma say it anyways.


I think a Prime Tarver could have beat Calzaghe.

The thing about Tarver, he fights with a great defense. And even though his fight style is basic, he uses his height and power to his maximum advantage and his jab was really good. Tarver makes you either try to make it an outside fight where he kills you with his jab or an inside fight where he shells up against effective shots and then blast you with his left hook when you open. Tarver had a real "meat and potatoes" style but it was very effective against some pretty good opposition. You look at Tarver's record and he beat some preety good opponents in his short time at pro, all of which while past his his prime.

I never though I would see those two words on this thread. Most people here refuse to give Tarver any kind of props whatsoever.

I guess what they say is true, "time heals all wounds".

I was watching some of his earlier fights on youtube and Tarver was really good at using that hook and upperut on the inside and blasting dudes with it. Not alot of combos inside, but enough one shots like one he floored Roy with, he KO'd alot of his oppposition with punches like that.

His jab was really nice. Kept opponents and at bay so they had to jump inside to get in, but he is good at shelling up and stepping back get in range and lay his body weight in those power punches.

 

Yeah, but Roy had power AND speed. You have to shell up or get knocked out, QUICK!

I don't think Joe C had anything that would have hurt Tarver enough for him to not get his offense off. Tarver fights like a matador inside. He will let a fighter jump, get wild and load off on him, take those punches on his arms (because they shouldn't count on the score card) let his opponent get winded and then load up and land 2-3 power shots. Then find his range again with the jab. He don't stand and trade with a fighter, he would rather you waste energy and svae his for a time better for him and it seemed to work for him.

 

When has Tarver been stopped early?
