    Spinks eats him for lunch.

Sort of an artificial barometer, no? Especially considering the level of comp.

Mario Veit had 30 W's under his belt when he fought Calzaghe and didn't make it out of the 1st......was he a decent challenger?

Are you impressed with Calzaghe's challengers?

Dude - Boxrec is about the last place to use as a barometer for rankings.

  4. tbh max kellerman knows more about boxing than the average joe on here... and i agree wit him i think alot of people dont like calzaghe because of when he fought roy jones jr (who was past his prime ) and some believe bhop beat him and was robbed but ... joe has a very awkward style hes hard to time hes relentless and he fast , i think he would of beat spinks like he beat everyone else he fought

    :rofl:rofl:rofl

I know, the Americans do seem to have a lot of hate for Joe. I admit as a Calzaghe fan that Joe wasted his talent and for that reason allowed everyone to question his ability and balls. However, that being said I thought these types of threads would have died by now considering he retired nearly two years ago.

Agreed. Anyway, boxrec has Spinks as 68th p4p all-time.... Calzaghe, not so high.

RUBBISH, Joe whipped prime Lacy, Kessler, and Hopkins who he also sexually humiliated that night and then slaughtered a very in-shape and motivated but past-prime Roy Jones Jr. Joe was and is the greatest super-middleweight to ever live and is an athletic marvel. Americans hate him because he is not American and is a pasty-faced white boy who is both bright, respectful and polite. They like their heroes like Mayweather; street scum, women-beaters, rascist hoodrats. Times have changed and not for the best in the ole U.S.A.

    Ridiculous.

Hopkins was prime at 43? Maybe compared to the other guys Calzaghe fought in their primes.

Mayweather takes a ton of sit from Americans as much as anyone else......and for much the same reason.

You can't claim to be the best without fighting the best. Period.

In Joe's case, he gets the added benefit of having fought the best when they were not at their best. Hopkins was 43.

    43

And Jones despite being "motivated and in shape" was -as they like to call in the business- shot to pieces.

Motivation and in shape are no substitution for far faded boxing skills.

Hopkins was a good but not great win for Calzaghe. Jones was worthless.

Hopkins at 43 was closer to his prime ability, than Calzaghe at 36.

One fighter depends on smarts and strength, the other speed and reactions.

Finally you are coming to terms with how good Calzaghe was, but still have to say he would be beaten in fantasy matches to help curve your hidden hate .
Lets remember Qawi had been beaten a few times before he fought Spinks so was an unbeatable recking ball. Many also fought Spinks was lucky against Larry Holmes, but that is irrellevent as it was at HW and Spinks made history with a great achievement. But at LHW Spinks would have been totally out boxed by Calzaghe that would make Spinks look silly.

Learn to accept that Calzaghe beat Hopkins and Jones, then you can move on, when you come to terms with this
Spinks is American, and I said Spinks would just be another American name in Calzaghes win column, which would read, Jones, Hopkins, Lacy, Manfredo, Sheika, Brewer, Mitchell. Then you could add Spinks

America has to live with the facts.
Calzaghe beat the best version of Hopkins sandwiched between Hopkins best wins of Tarver, Wright and Pavlik. Thats right the best version of Hopkins who was stronger than he had been at MW, hydrated more experienced and was scoring his best wins. Does anyone think the Hopkins that lost to Jones would have beaten the version of Hopkins that beat Pavlik? I dont, and if people are honest they will say the same.
Calzaghe scored the single highest score on any card against Hopkins ever 116-111.
Calzaghe beat Jones when he had adjusted back to LHW and was rated by The Ring mag having scored 3 tune up wins.

Spinks would be out boxed and soundly beaten.

Read how the same Americans will now say that Hopkins, Jones, Tarver, Dawson, etc would have all beaten Spinks but not Calzaghe.

America has to resort to fantasy matches to try and find someone to beat Calzaghe because non of Americas best SMWs or LHWs of Calzaghes era could manage it

    Come on.

Hopkins prime was in his MW years 97-04ish.

Calzaghe was coming off his best wins when he decided to fight Jones. You only say that because, Calzaghe up and retired after. If Calzaghe had continued on and won some more fights.....something i think he was fully capable of when he
retired.... you wouldn't say that. He did what he liked to do, he protected the "0".

PS- Hopkins definitely relies on his smarts in the ring, but he hasn't KO'd anyone in years.
