Actually it's Roman Polanski KO'ing Jake "the snake" Lamotta. Polanski, a 38 year old ex-lightweight champion, decided to come out of retirement to fight the then reigning champ Lamotta. It's hard to tell it was LaMotta cos you can't see his face, now I look at it, it does look a little like him, probably should have guessed at LaMotta seeing as the guy in the picture's on the floor like LaMotta always was. Doesn't look anything like Polanski to me though. I'll take your word for it, maybe it's the angle and facial expression and the different haircut.
Yup, Polanski had to gain a lot of muscle mass so that his lightweight frame would make the super heavyweight limit. It also changed his hair and made him African-American, due to "recessive" genes becoming prevalent during weight gain... some crazy fanatics still insist that Polanski had died years before and was being replaced with a 7" tall black man. The fight itself was at a 310lb catchweight. Of course in the end this favoured Roman, for as we all know... bigger muscles equals more punching power.
