In the ring, from a technical standpoint should boxers rely on fighting ability and discard with the boxing for a while? textbook boxing of course doesn't mention "brawling" per se, inside fighting which is different because when inside, youre not technically supposed to be trading shots, but firing yours and he still has to miss his. Some ATG's never fought in a brawl like Napoles and Jones Jr. but there are other ATG's because of their "brawling", not boxing for example Sugar Ray Robinson would get into brawls which was a reason he was popular, because he could do both. Dempsey, Greb, Duran all because of their fighting ability were respected and known. So, thoughts, is it good that obxers get into brawls from your POV or should they do it like theyre supposed to and simply box?

Depends on the opposition. If you're facing a technically inferior but stronger fighter you should try not to brawl - while he should try and make into a brawl.

Depends. You may catch a fighter off guard or come against a mentally weak fighter or a fighter not capable of brawling. Look what Bonecrusher Smith did to Tim Witherspoon or Corrie Sanders did to W. Klitschko.
Golota, Wladmir Klitschko they were technically good fighters but could easily be taken advantage of when drug into a brawl.

I think every truly great fighter can brawl if he has to.

Should a boxer brawl reminds me of the scorpion who asked the turtle to give him a lift across the river.

The turtle said, "Why should I give you a lift? You'll sting me 'n I'll die"

"Why would I do that? I'll die too," replied the scorpion.

So the turtle agreed and half way across the scorpion stung him.

    "WHY DID YOU DO THAT?"

    "It's in my character"

    It's who SRR was.

depends on their style. Some box, some brawl- everyone fights to their strengths.

It depends but if he does it should be 'educated brawling', it doesn't mean you have to abondon defense, tactics and technique. If you're older or in against a fit pressure fighter, going on the backfoot/running will wear you out so tactically that isn't a good thing. Its also important to get your opponents respect and hurt him to make him think twice about what he does against you

If brawling is the ticket for letting the boxer go home early with a win it's Kosher in my book!

Nothing I love more that beautiful boxing (sticking and moving, slipping and sliding inside, and countering). However, at some point I need to see all that boxing add up to power punching combations intended to do harm and produce an exciting KO.

Robinson is the best example of this, which was already said by John.

    A scorpion's sting wouldn't penetrate a turtle's shell.
