There is no way you can call this fight a highway robbery using the rounds system. Curry tired perceptably and let Benitez back in the fight.
KL, I was there,,,,and the whole place, including the 'super large Puerto Rican contingent' boo'ed that decision. The roof of Madison Square Garden was nearly blown off. Outside on 34th street, there was near riot. How Judge Barney Smith could call that fight 7-3-0 for Benetiz was one for the ages. This decision was to 'protect' the house fighter. Bruce Curry clearly won Rounds; '1', '3', '4', '5' and '6', just the way Mr. Mercante saw it!
So in your eyes, by the round system which it was scored, it was a draw... By your own admission, on a rounds basis this was a close fight. Sooo, hardly a robbery.
Well, if you go by a round system,,,,I had it 5-3-2 I only gave Benetiz, Rounds '2', '7' and '10'. I had '8' and '9' Even. Thats why the round system in New York 'sucked'. Arthur Mercante also had the 8th Even.
Round 5; At the 0:00 mark, Benetiz comes out if his corner on wobbly legs. He looks as if he doesn't know where he is. At the 0:05 mark; Curry fires a left-right, and Benetiz backs up. Curry lands a good left hook and right hand, as Benetiz falls back into the ropes. At the 0:09 mark; Curry lands a looping right as Benetiz is falling backwards. Benetiz is down! Benetiz is quickly up at the count of 1, as Mercante gives the required 8-count. At the 0:17 mark; Curry lands a big left hook that drives Benetiz staggering into the ropes. Curry follows with a glancing right. Benetiz is in bad shape, as he wobbles. At the 0:25 mark; Curry is stalking, looking for the one 'bomb' to end it. At the 0:30 mark; Benetiz backs into another corner, and Curry unloads an 8-punch barrage. Benetiz is reeling backwards, and back into another corner. At the 0:50 mark; Curry traps Benetiz in the corner, and lets go with a slow 3-punch combination. Both fighters are exhausted. At the 1:00 mark; Referee Mercante stops the action, and pulls both fighters out of the corner, and into ring-center. For the next 20-seconds both fighters try to regain their composure, and limit their punches. At the 1:20 mark; Benetiz switches to southpaw, and lands 3 light right jabs. Curry counters with a good left hook to the head. At the 1:24 mark; Bruce Curry is exhausted, and arm weary. At the 1:31 mark; Benetiz lunges at Curry, but Curry puts both his hands on Benetiz shoulders and forces him down to the canvas. Benetiz has no legs left. At the 1:37 mark; Both fighters flail away, but no one lands anything damaging. At the 1:52 mark; Benetiz is backed into another corner. Curry lands a big left hook. Bentiz wobbles again. At the 2:00 mark; Benetiz stays in the corner, and rotates his gloves, like he's planning an attack. Both fighter get into a brief exchange, and Curry gets the better of it. At the 2:14 mark; Curry chases Benetiz, but he's too exhausted and arm weary to mount another rally. Benetiz keeps moving backwards. At the 2:43 mark; Benetiz is throwing weak left jabs, as Curry just stalks. Curry misses with a big left hook. Round Ends Round 5; Bruce Curry [10-8]
I got both fights a couple of days ago and will review them again in these past weeks. For now, I'll just say that Curry shouldn't have let it go to the cards in the first place.
Thats exactly why Monroe Brooks didn't want to fight Benetiz in Madison Square Garden. Defintely the 'worst decision' of the year in NYC boxing. When Bruce Curry agreed to comeback for the Benetiz-Curry II fight, he specifically had written in his contract, that Arthur Mercante and the '2' blind mice judges were not to be associated with this fight at all!
With the Don King heavyweight tournament around in 1977 (LeDoux-Bourdeaux for example), Benitez-Curry was nothing in comparison, especially considering that you scored it 5-3-2 for Curry. Give Benitez the two drawn rounds, and it's even. You could still score the fight for Curry with the supplemental points scoring, but must admit that it was unquestionably close, closer than it had any right to be since Benitez was nearly out in one of the rounds. Win or lose, Benitez showed a champion's heart in getting up from the knockdowns to finish the fight.
Well,,,,,its a little hard to explain,,,,,,,,unless you were at the fight. PaPa Benetiz was like a 'lunatic', and had to be restrained several times. Besides going down twice in Round 4 and once in Round 5. Benetiz was staggered in the 1st, 3rd and in the 9th, when his legs buckled from a Bruce Curry body shot. I will post the scorecard sheets, you can check them out. Teddy Brenner must have had them go through his hands first, before Jackie Lee read them.......... 'Save the Benetiz'
I do think that 7-3 in favour of Benitez was a bad scorecard, although in all fairness it was probably more so due to incompetence rather than outright corruption. 5-4-1 in favour of Benitez I could see. Wilfred Benitez's dad was not only like a lunatic, he was a lunatic.
Come on man, now you are really reaching. There or not the fight can clearly be seen and judged on its own merits. Who gives a **** if the crowd was going wild. Fights arent scored on what the crowd is doing. Basically you are telling us that you scored a close fight for one guy based on the emotion of the event which judges are trained and instructed NOT TO DO.
Sold out by his own camp having him fight in japan a week before the fight surely didn't help though.Really looking after him there weren't they.
KLOMPTON, You don't really believe that. Judges not being influenced by the crowd. I guess you never attended a fight in Madison Square Garden, NYC with 14,000 Puerto Rican fans behind you. Lora, Check out the $$$$ that Bruce Curry got for going over to Japan. 3X as much as in the States. AHHH SO!
On a numbers issue, Teddy Brenner in trying to make a Wilfred Benetiz vs. Monroe Brooks fight; 1) Monroe Brooks wanted $40,000 and for some kind of NYSAC 140 lb. Title. 2) Teddy Brenner countered with $12,500, and a non-title bout at 145 lbs. 3) Monroe Brooks countered with $30,000, and a non-title bout at 142 lbs. 4) Teddy Brenner countered with $15,000, and a non-title bout at 144 lbs. 5) Monroe Brooks countered with $25,000, and a non-title bout at 143 lbs. Teddy Brenner told Monroe Brooks he only had $15,000 to offer, and that was it. Also, Benetiz could not make 143 lbs. and 144lbs. was low as he could go. And his father Gregorio would not let the kid into the ring at less than 144 lbs. Monroe Brooks said no way at $15,000, and at 144 lbs. A loss, would push him down in the Light Welterweight rankings. Monroe Brooks suggested his friend and room-mate, Bruce Curry 14-0-0 (7KO's) Bruce Curry agreed, for $4000 and at a maximum weight of 145 lbs.
