avoid slapsie maxie rosenbloom?he fought just about everyone but his manager kept him away from maxie. why?
Same reason why Lewis avoided Byrd and Ruiz. He probably would have beaten him but would have looked bad.
Even from a standpoint of actualy beating Louis, Rosenbloom might have been a high risk low reward proposition early in his career. I think this is one fight that I would have steered the young Louisw clear of.
Joe Louis would have alienated the New York "Jewish' crowd if he hurt Maxie. The Jewish fans were Joe Louis' biggest supporters and staunchest fans. 'Don't bite the hand that feeds you'
None of the above. I recall the scuttlebut was Louis didn';t fear being hurt by Slapsie Maxie, but he wouldn't look like the Brown Bomber in winning. Rosenbloom was a rugged "spoiler " type, that either beat you or made you look bad in the process of winning. Rosenbloom made every fighter look bad, except for one guy. Yep, you guessed it. Harry Greb !
It is worth noting that the young Joe Louis was trailing on the score cards in both his bouts with Lee Ramage before his power bailed him out. This might have suggested to his handlers that Rosenbloom would have a spoilers chance.
He said that Ramage was a better technician thaqn Billy Conn. It is worth noting that Ramage was the only fighter who ever handeled Louis on the score cards, before the Charles fight. Guys like Conn and Walcott wernt having it all their own way.
True T. In 1928 Milligan stopped Maxie Rosenbloom in the 9th round with a body blow.. Rosenbloom claimed a foul punch, but the ref claimed it was a tko. First time Rosenbloom was ever stopped. Two months later Milligan was kod in one round by Brit Frank Moody, who in turn was kod by Harry Greb. And Kid Norfolk was kod by Frank Moody... Boxing is a funny game methinks ...But little ole Harry Greb was kod by no one [aside from his 1st year].
