Who should Jeffries use a crouch against, and who should he fight from a more upright posture? (Assume fighters mentioned are born into Jeffries time, develop in analogy to how they developed in their own times, peak in 1905, and that Jeffries is willing to fight any of them in a 20-round bout).

    John L Sullivan
    Peter Jackson
    Jack Johnson
    Sam Langford
    Jack Dempsey
    Gene Tunney
    Joe Louis
    Ezzard Charles
    Rocky Marciano
    Sonny Liston
    Muhammad Ali
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Larry Holmes
    Mike Tyson
    Evander Holyfield
    Lennox Lewis

Feel free to suggest other boxers.

Unfortunately, I think he would be going horizontal against most of these... and not by choice.

    John L Sullivan -- crouch
    Peter Jackson -- upright
Jack Johnson -- upright, but I'm interested in counter-arguments
    Sam Langford -- crouch
Jack Dempsey -- crouch, maybe upright if fight goes to late rounds
    Gene Tunney -- upright
    Joe Louis -- crouch
    Ezzard Charles -- upright
    Rocky Marciano -- crouch
    Sonny Liston --
    This content is protected

    Muhammad Ali -- upright
    Joe Frazier -- crouch
    George Foreman --

    Larry Holmes -- upright
Mike Tyson -- probably crouch, am interested in counter-arguments
    Evander Holyfield -- probably upright
    Lennox Lewis -- upright

What distinct differences does 'the crouch' make to Jeffries style and MO?

The crouch tends to slow Jeffries, and is associated with a MO of waiting out his opponent and countering. Stand up Jeffries tended to be faster and more agressive, though perhaps catching more in the face than if he had crouched. The crouch probably made his body a bit harder to reach -- however, in his crouching years, he tended to go very light, to compensate for the slowning effect of the crouch; he didn't worry so much about his weight in the later, more upright years, and if going upright made his body a little more available, not going so light probably made him more resilliant to body blows.

    ---

For this thread, we're looking at a 1905 Jeffries -- he's not weight obsessed, he's generally more skillful and aggressive than the 1899/1900 Jeffries; he's faster because he's more upright; one question is, if 1905 Jeffries did crouch, will he be slower than crouching 1900 Jeffries because of increased weight?; or will improvement in his foot work compensate for the greater weight?

He lasted a lot longer than five seconds against Jack Johnson even after years of inactivity.

    No.

He switched to a more upright stance around the time of the second Ruhlin fight, which was also when he became more offensivley orientated.

Because of the times, the crowd, the people helping him back into the ring, the lynch mob on hand, Jack Johnson was reluctant to go full black on his ass

Did he think they would be nicer to him if he prolonged the process a bit?

Pachilles..i have a question for you...you seem to have zero regard for any fighters before 1960 (maybe a little for Louis and Robinson) so my question is....how would you do in a fight aganst Jeffries, or Dempsey? how fast and brutally do you knock their punk ass the **** out?
