Can Agbeko make a run at being the 2nd best Ghanaian of all time?

Reading the long line of Mexican greats threads led me to a random thought...can Agbeko become the 2nd best Ghanaian fighter of all time behind Nelson?

I must admit, I'm not exactly educated on the lineage of great Ghanaian fighters although Quartey(and his simply incredible jab) was one of my favorites back in the late 90s and early 2000s. So having said that, I don't know how off-base my question is, but I'd like to hear the thoughts.

Winning the tourney can really start him on that path to greatness. I wish him the best. It's going to be a war against Mares!!!

 

Well, he wont surpass Azumah Nelson and I cant see him doing better than Quartey so, no.

 

Why won't he do better than either? Do you see some major flaws in him? or you just think he won't beat Mares?

 

Agbeko will be slightly above or on a Clottey type of level when it's all said and done. He's not as good as Ike. Btw Ghana doesn't really produce enough fighters for how popular the sport is in some parts of that country. There's a little place called Bochum, which is all boxing.

 

There isnt really any MAJOR flaws, I'm a fan of his, but I do see Mares beating him. Quartey beat Verno Phillips when well past his best, Vince Phillips, arguably beat De La Hoya and Oba Carr amongst others. Agbeko's good and I think will probably end up being between 3-5 best Ghanaian ever.

 

There's already a not horrible argument that he's a top 5 Ghanian ever. He's definitely behind Nelson, Quartey and David Kotey, but who else would obviously belong in front of him? Clottey? Konadu? Alottey? Alfred Kotey? They're all around the same vicinity as Agbeko anyway, IMO.

 

Ok, gottcha. I was impressed with the way Agbeko beat Perez in the rematch. If he can beat Mares, he might be on the way to greatness. we shall see.

 

Agbeko looked brilliant against Perez. I think he'll beat Mares if he can box like that.

 

Not gonna surpass Azumah, nor Ike Quartey most probably. He is above Clottey though and he's probably top 5.

Could be top 3.

He will handle Mares fairly easily, of this I have no doubt.

I think he is underrated on here in almost every department, he can bang, box, has tidy footwork and a good D. All round good fighter.

 

Konadu is ahead of him at the moment IMO..but there is enough talent around Agbeko at the moment that if he can beat them all, he would very likely slip ahead.

 

I don't think he'll pass Azumah Nelson either and that's why I left the topic as "2nd best fighter". As much as I was a big Quartey fan I don't think his spot as #2 is untouchable. He was definitely a great fighter and had an all-time level jab...but he's tricky. As talented as he was, he gave all of the top fighters he faced hell (except Wright when Quartey was way past it)...but he officially lost all of those big fights, his best official win was probably his beatdown on Oba Carr.

I think he can catch Quartey, but he has work to do.

 

He's far behind Nelson and Quartey. He's behind Konadu too, but maybe he can pass him up by cleaning out BW - which would be tough.

 

Ike wasn't managed properly, as a result he was left disillussioned and lost interest early. He should've got the Trinidad and Whitaker fights and i thought he beat Oscar. You're right though his place is not rock solid.

 

I felt he beat Oscar as well. I may be wrong but I think he and Trinidad were supposed to fight at one point but there was a lawsuit between Ike and his promoters (I think).

I still currently hold Ike above Agbeko of course, mainly because he arguably beat De La Hoya, Vargas, and Forrest in spite of having officially lost to them, and he certainly beat Oba Carr.

Agbeko's resume at the moment mainly hinges on that he beat Darchinyan(I thought easier than the scores indicated), Perez, and he arguably beat Sidorenko. He still has some time left and if he beats Mares he'll have an opportunity at more big matches.
