Hopkins and his team devised their strategy for Calzaghe. It was the same defensive style Hopkins had been using since his decline were for a good part of the fight his back is to the ropes and he slides along the ropes making his opponent miss and answering with short, crisp counters. This is how the fight went with Hopkins making Calzaghe miss with his wild flailing arm slaps while eating short jabs, hooks, and uppercuts in exchange. The problem in using this particular strategy against Calzaghe at this late stage in his career is that it depends on a great deal of leg work and constant attention to defensive posture which although saw Hopkins winning all of the infighting exchanges, also had Hopkins using his legs more than expected and tiring over time because of the effort. Hopkins did enough to win the fight, but the style deployed left the judgement open to biased judges who used the opportunity to make Hopkins regret his pre-fight hype statement regarding a white boy.
Had a rematch occured, we would have been graced to see the real marvel of Bernard Hopkins. The average fan would have expected to see a repeat of the first fight, but would soon be captivated as they quickly realized that Hopkins was deploying a completely different, more fan entertainment friendly style based on offensive aggression. Rather than waste energy ducking and fending punches/slaps, we would have seen Hopkins instead using that energy to mount offensive barrages against Calzaghe as we did in Hopkins- Pavlik. I, and I'm sure Hopkins believes he would gain a clear win against Calzaghe using this new strategy. He proved it in his next fight against Pavlik.
