I see where you're coming from but I dont like the whole fighter B beat fighter C so it doesnt matter. I prefer to go by who they actually beat.(or were ducked by)

Fair enough but look below. In the Ring 99 ratings, there are 4 fighters in the 10 that Calzaghe beat, 2 that wouldnt fight him, and 1 that pulled out and retired instead, and with the other names on the list they come back to Calzaghe. Not to forget that also Calzaghe beat #10 Catley by KO when they were amateurs which wasnt greatly long ago at this point.

    Understand now?

Professional fighters do not put their lives on the line anymore than a professional football risks death on the field. This is because fighters prepare by training and sparring helping to mitigate the risk on injury. Odds being what they are, fatalities in professional boxing are far less than the US death by self inflicted handgun annual deaths. A boxer can get in the ring and regardless of training, skill potential, or risk of injury, still be a bum. Look at the Klits sisters. Two Big Ass Goofy Bums.:yep

tbh you know there are really only 3 feasible names that could have improved calzaghes resume.

    ottke, johnson and beyer.

but the truth is this, if he beats ottke, lacy never becomes champ, and he never gets the big exposure he drastically needed. if he beats beyer, kessler never becomes champ and he never gets the big win he drastically needed. if he beats johnson, well he wouldnt have got much credit then, but would have received it in hindsight.

so at smw, would victories over ottke and beyer eclips those of lacy and kessler? i'm not so sure, but it would have been good had the fights been made.

obviously light heavyweight was an option, especially a couple of years before he moved up. victories over jones, tarver, woods, johnson, erdei, dawson and hopkins really would have been the icing on the cake, but that would have taken a long time and he obviosuly didn't have the hunger and passion that kept hopkins fighting into his late 40's.

all in all he has easily done enough to be seen as the best ever smw. in terms of p4p atg standings, well some marquee names are missing, so he sould be seen up there with the likes of ricardo lopez IMO

Ottke and Beyer wouldnt fight Calzaghe and as you say Calzaghe needed the Lacy fight for exposure.
Calzaghe beat the fighter that beat Beyer the most conclusively
Johnson had more losses at SMW that wins and had lost to Ottke. Johnson also lost to (and I know you hate these examples) Branco, who lost Woodhall who Calzaghe beat and lost to Sheika who Calzaghe beat. Or even Vanderpool who Lacy beat who lost to Calzaghe.
Just look at the form line. I could do even more examples

If Joe is an american and a black, he would exactly be a Mayweather - undefeated, skillfull, brittle hands, fights in only one place, not a puncher, and with resume questioned. Calzaghe though is more offensive and fan-friendly style.

Mayweather gets a pass for beating JMM and Mosley yet Clazaghe won't get one for beating Jones and Hopkins.

I just don't see why Calzaghe is getting so much flak.
