Just look at The Ring magazines 1999 SMW ratings

    Title Vacant

    5.Charles Brewer
    6.Thomas Tate
    7.Frankie Liles
    8.Richie Woodhall
    9.Robin Reid
    10.Glenn Catley

    Now read below

    Calzaghe was #2.
#1 Ottke refused to fight Calzaghe
    #3 Mitchell, Calzaghe beat.
#4 Beyer refused to fight Calzaghe
    #5 Brewer, Calzaghe beat

#1 Ottke refused to fight Calzaghe......

    Says who ? Joe lol
Joes title didnt hold major merit at thime why the hell couldnt he drop it to face sven or become a challenger or challenge a name in a higher class ?

    #3 Mitchell, Calzaghe beat.

Yeah the good old UK fighter nodding to the UK ref to stop it , he did this with Manfredo also . Terrible unfair stoppage

Everyone else is either Joe beat a guy that beat him (sorry this is not a valid excuse)

Or else they didnt want to fight Joe which is a pure joke , Calzaghe didnt make consessions to anyone in those days I dont believe all these guys plus all the other good fighters were afraid. thats rubbish

Joe used to say that he wouldnt go to germany to face Ottke but had no problem going to face veit a guy he beat in 1 round previous

    long awaited rematch right there

Yeah people would like to believe that
Johnson had more losses at SMW than wins.
    Johnson had lost to Ottke.
Johnson also lost to (and I know people hate these examples) Branco, who lost Woodhall who Calzaghe beat and lost to Sheika who Calzaghe beat. Or even Vanderpool who Lacy beat who lost to Calzaghe.
Calzaghe beat Hopkins who beat Johnson
Johnson lost to Sosa who lost to Liles who lost to Mitchell who lost to Calzaghe. Now this last example was a bit of a joke but in truth just look at the form line.
Johnson has lost almost every time he steps up. His only real victories of note was a win over Woods before he won a world title, Tarver who was limited and couldnt beat the worse version of Jones Jnr and who got thrashed by Hopkins, and beating Jones coming off of a KO loss when he hadnt adjusted back to LHW, the Tarver win looked very debateable.
    Thats it.
Johnsons record in world title fights is 3-7-1 or if you include his WBU SMW loss to Branco, it is an even poorer 3-8-1

Still when Calzaghe was ringside with a view to having the fight with Johnson, Johnson lost again, that time to Woods. So Calzaghe didnt duck Johnson, Johnson lost and blew his chance

That's just BS. Mitchell went down hard and was badly hurt and hit with many shots. Legit stoppage.

Otherwise, Joe deserves the criticism he gets. EDIT: Except in regards to Hopkins.

The earlier post was only a joke....I knew you had quoted an eaelier post. I'm using my phone and difficult sometimes.

As for the rankings.....I really don't think it shows much one way or the other. The rankings are from 99. Joe only fought Reid in 99 out of the ranked guys I believe.

Mitchell went down after Joe and it was clear he hadn't fully recovered.

The ref ignored Calzaghe's gesture and watched Mitchell continue to take punishment. It was only stopped when he stumbled back on to the ropes and bounced off in no position to defend himself.

I knew you were being sarcastic, thats why I said "Yeah people would like to believe that" Not "You".
I just thought I would put that in, as so many like to forget the facts

Ottkes trainer is nto the final say on this , who knows their personal circumstances, the fact is that Joe was rated behind him and never made the fight and he couldve somewhat forced it but then he would have to give up his great title record that in truth was hogwash as there was another champ with such a record also who was unified and rated above him therefore the so called rein was a farce plain and simple he was a top contender all those years thats all

He could have dropped the belt ANYTIME. Joe C was content on defending a belt with the worst rankngs and staying at home making bank. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.
