Beibut Shumenov vs. Juergen Braehmer - January 8th

This is the first important title bout of 2011.

It is at the Ice Mansion in Beibut's hometown in western Kazakhstan (famous for bringing us Gennady Golovkin, Vasiliy Jirov and...uh, Borat...)

Both are big punchers who generally rely on being tougher than their opponents and able to deal more damage than they absorb. Braehmer is winding down a now eleven-year pro career, while Shumenov is continuing his hellish schedule in a relatively young campaign.

The undercard features Russian knockout artist Gayrat Ahmedov in a race against the clock to try and dispose of 40-year-old William Joppy (a player a long time ago in a division far away) in impressively quick fashion.

Does anybody know about what time the main event (or co-feature) is set to begin? Shymkent is GMT +5, unlike the capital city of Astana (where Golovkin fought recently) which is GMT +6. So if the main event is at what we consider a normal local time like 10 or 11pm, it should be around noontime in the eastern US. Can anybody confirm?

No - you're right, General Forum...by all means let us instead keep replying to the likes of "I think Hopkins is on PEDS", "Pac Man on BRUCE LEE", "Calzaghe the KO specialist" and rehashes of the Klitschko-Haye soap opera.

Shumenov seems to be highly conditioned but one-dimensional hacking-machine. Brahmer has the advantage boxingskill-wise and is much more experienced. But Brahmer was in trouble with Sukhotsky who's style is somewhat similar with Shumenov's. And the fight is in Shumenov's hometurf. Hard to say - this could turn out to be schooling day for Shumenov, but then again Shumenov's suberb condition might the winning factor and Shumenov could hammer his way to victory. I'll go with my gut-feeling and say Shumenov wins this by the way of KO/TKO.

 

Both of them are decent fighters but nothing special, basically paper champs in the old days.

Shumenov is still somewhat unproven, despite having been matched very tough from the beginning. This fight will actually answer a lot of remaining questions about him.

We already know what Braehmer's all about. He was never destined to be a great champion - just an exciting and battle-ready type, good enough to keep a belt warm for a little while...

I am looking forward to the fight. Hopefully some guys who get this on TV (where outside of Kazakhstan is this shown at all?) will be able to stream this, I don't want to miss it.

 

Should be a good fight. I have trouble picking a winner. Neither guy is the most skilled in the world. I went draw. Seemed like the scoring was fair for Shumenov's last title fight in KZ.

 

Shumenov has shown a great will to improve. He definitely looked better against Uzelkov in terms of movement, albeit against a basically stationary opponent. You also have to really like his heart and punch output. Brahmer is a tough dude, but also limited. Shumenov has the advantages here of youth, motivation, and fighting in his home country. I really think with Kevin Barry Shumenov has a huge upside and will outwork Brahmer for a decision or possibly even late round ko.

 

Shumenov is improving rapidly while Braehmer has recently been in jail. I think it is all up in the air IMO.

 

Very good fight flying under the radar, it will crown the best LHW IMO after Hopkins and Pascal. Brahmer is a tough SOB but IMO and improved Shumenov will take this in a punchfest.

 

Shumenov will win on points, I think it will be close though.

Toss up for me, but Shumi is fighting at home (Kazachstan/Boratistan)

 

Shumenov on points imo. The winner will have to face cleverly next tho and I see neither of them posing him a problem. He seems to struggle with defensive minded boxers, but he has proved more than adept at dismantling come forward types.

But i'm jumping too far forward there, I see shumenov dominating the early rounds with a big finish from jurgen that won't be enough for victory.

 

anyone know what Braehner's purse will be?

I'm surprised he is going all the way out there unless its for good money.
