Tyson became champ after he beat Spinks, so it´s Patterson. He probably was he best hw before that but that´s not important. You aren´t the champ until you beat the champ - with the exception of the championship beeing vacant.

Patterson, becaus he won the lineal title at a younger age.

    Both Cus DaMatto fighters interestingly.

I give the distinction to Tyson.

He won the belt at 20.
He unified at younger age than Patterson.

    He was the champion.

    Unified younger than Patterson?

How? Because he was older than Patterson was, when he beat Spinks!

A unified champion by definition, has to beat all other claimants to unify the title, and Spinks had a rather strong claim, that meant anyone wanting to unify the World Championship had to beat him.

And if we are merely talking about alphabet crap, then the answer is me...

    I claimed a world title in 88, aged 14.

Patterson was the youngest champ, Tyson was the youngest title holder.

Spinks pulled out of the HBO tourney, so Tyson would've been younger. No?

I figured this thread would go differently on Classic. :yep I never went back to the gen forum thread after a guy was telling me there was more than one lineal title...There's only so much you can take before you try to fight stupid with stupid. I can't remember if I'd past that point by the time I cut out or not.

Good answer. Tyson himself has said he considered himself as champion when he beat Berbick, but as long as Michael Spinks remained undefeated and not retired, then that claim has to be acknowledged. I consider this to have been a unification bout, like Smith and Tucker. We know in retrospect that Tyson was the best heavyweight in the world with Berbick, and possibly earlier, but that's not how we assess championships. It has to get done in the ring.

True, but what about Spinks skipping the tournament? I just came back from the Gen Forum and Demigawd made some valid arguments.

You both had good arguments, though.

That's what I thought at first, but then the multiple lineal titles thing came up and blood started to come out of my ears and anus and I started :desk:wall:pc
