I apologize for my misunderstanding, I did not add the comma to make an argument, I added the comma becuase I thought I was correcting your grammar (I have a habit of correcting spelling etc in posts I quote ). Anyway, I talked it through with a mate, he explained what you actually meant and made me realise the comma I added does change the context entirely - man I feel like an ass.

 

I was trying to remember the "This is it!" card, but I couldn't remember them all. It was going to be a monumental project if it happened. I can only recall two of the fights for sure and that was Weaver-Cooney for Weaver's WBA title and Arguello-Kenty for Kenty's WBA title. Further research here is required.

i'm skipping to the end to say my favourite fight that never happened was hagler-curry in 1986. i'd say that 1)it'd be an ATG fight 2)Curry, without being weight drained as against Honeyghan, had a real chance of winning

I always felt that McGuigan BEFORE he won the WBA title had a decent chance against Azumah...

Sorry to digress from the point of the thread...

I remember the "This Is It" card referred to earlier, I was going to move heaven and earth to get to NY to see this card...but then it was cancelled...gutted...

 

One that i read about in George Kimballs book was Leonard-Hearns in 1978. It nearly took place right after Leonards fight with Ecklund. The fight was discussed when Angelo Dundee who was in charge ofLeonards matchmaking was out of the country on a cruise in August of 78 and was unreachable by phone. At this time the television network abc called to offer Leonard a televised fight with Hearns, which would take place in September of 78 in the providence civic centre. Leonard would have made $100,000 and hearns $12,500. Leonards people accepted the offer.The night before the scheduled press conference was due to take place,Dundee who had just returned from the cruise and had got word of the fight called and told the leonard camp that the fight was off. the reason Dundee gave for calling the fight off was that leonard wasnt ready yet for Hearns. He knew how good hearns was even then. Were lucky it didnt take place then, i cant imagine it being as half a great fight as it was three years later when both fighters had hit their prime

I was actually under the impression that Dundee pulled the plug on the SRL-Hitman fight in '78 not because he didn't feel that SRL was ready, but that he thought the fight would make a lot more money for both of them down the line. I think I read this in Sam Toperoff's book "Sugar Ray Leonard and Other Noble Warriors".

 

You a bit tired there man? Most of what im going by if off George Kimballs book The four kings. He quoted Dundee as saying ''Ray isnt ready for hearns. Not now, but in a year or two he will be. And by the time he is, this fight is going to be worth much more than we're talking about how''. This was supposedly said from a call made by Leonards promter at the time Daniel Doyle to Dundee. so if this book is anything to go by he did say it would be bigger a few years down the line but also that leonard wasnt ready for hearns.

 

Thats the one I was going to pick.It would have been a good fight,it was a good fight when it went eventually went but it would have been better in 91
