The guys fighting at 140 are the same size - and often bigger - than the guys fighting at 147.

Marcos Maidana is 5'9 and comes in the ring over 150
Amir Khan is 5'10 and comes in the ring over 150
Victor Ortiz is 5'9 and comes in the ring over 150
Devon Alexander who is 5'7 and comes in the ring over 150
Timothy Bradley who is 5'6 and comes in the ring over 150

With most of the bigger Welters moving to 154 (e.g. Cotto, Clottey, Margarito), the top guys are:

Pacquiao who is 5'6 and comes in the ring under 150
Mayweather who is 5'8 and probably still enters the ring right around 150
Berto who is 5'8 and enters the ring right around 150
Mosley who is 5'9 and I have no idea what he weighs on fight night, but probably around 160, though Mosley himself has said he could still make 140

These guys fight at Jr WW so they can drain themselves and have a weight advantage on fight night against more "natural" 140lbers, but most (or all) of the top guys at 140 are the same size, anyway. Most hardcore fans agree that there are too many divisions in boxing, and I think the 140lb division is a pretty good example of why.

In their most recent outings, the fight-night weights were:

    Khan - 149
    Maidana - 149
    Alexander - 149
    Kotelnik - 148
Bradley - 149 (and this was for his welterweight fight)

To me, those numbers looking pretty normal for junior welterweights. Ain't nobody having weight advantages there, my friend.

Berto was 160 his last fight. Almost every fighter puts on 10 lbs after his weigh in. Why are you surprised by this?

Berto and Mayweather are both 155+

Only 1 WW less than 150.

Ortiz does not enter the ring over 150... lmao Not sure where you pulled that info up? I read he was walking around before a fight at roughly 147-149 pounds? I can put a source if you'd like..

Keep in mind, Maidana isn't "ripped" or absolutely "shredded" at the weigh ins... he also only swells up to 149.

He could probably train a teenie bit harder and cut off a pound or two.

khan is a big boy. You got that one spot on. Don't have a clue how he made lightweight and you can clearly see his chin has improved due to the added weight/less drain.

Timothy is about 148, 8lbs over the weight isn't much..

I just see alot of flawed weights there :good lol

Yeah, but the guys at welter rehydrate to like 160.

Still, you make a good point. We have entirely too many weight classes.

I would also like to note, I'm not a big 141 pounder and I cut 4-6 pounds same day weigh-in.. so.. ?

all junior weight divisions are stupid, they're a way for the ABC orgs to make more money.

    Cruiserweight too.

I would be shocked if this were true, seeing as Berto was 152 against Quintana.

Victor Ortiz is 155lbs almost every fight. :huh In fact, in his fight against Peterson, Roy Jones' fight commentary was almost exclusively about the weight discrepancy in the ring, as Peterson was 146.

I dont agree on weight. I think it just seems like a junior varsity division. The last time we had a true great fighter in that division who wasn't just passing through to the bigger paydays at welterweight was Tszyu.
