Which boxer do you believe to be the GREATEST from the following?

If this is all time, Ricky Hatton's name should be up there.

I picked Chavez as he was Mexico's hero and it's a pretty large! Ali was not everyone cup of tea, nor was SRR cos everyone wanted to see him beat, although his my pick for the Greatest out of the list!

There are only two possible acceptable choices from that list: Armstrong or Robinson. Both are well ahead of everyone else, even Ali and Duran. Today I chose Armstrong, but on another day I may have chosen Robinson, it's a toss-up between those two. Throw in Harry Greb, Sam Langford and Ezzard Charles and you have the clear and indisputable (and interchangeable) top five fighters in the history of boxing.

 

The only reason people DON'T list Greb is honestly the lack of fight footage. He has the best record by quite some distance IMO. Look at how Langford's stock rose with the recent recovery of the Jeanette footage.

 

I voted for SRR also, but do people hyper criticized SRR like they do modern fighters?

I mean if Cotto is damaged goods after 1 defeat, what does that say to 90% of SRR's victories over HoFers? Most of them have 2, 3 even 5+ defeats ?

Though I feel confident SRR is still #1, I think Classic fighters get a lot of free pass compared to modern fighters, especially when labeling victories as shot, damaged, old, dehydrated, etc, etc.

 

This wasnt a list full of the ATG otherwise the list would be very different, i wanted to know who ESB regarded as the greatest from these particular fighters

 

You know, I can understand how someone might have Roy Jones Jr. or Mike Tyson on their greatest of all time lists....

To elaborate, when people saw their talents early on, it was kinda unearthly.. for Tyson it was like "That power and speed is insane".. for RJJ it was "His athleticism and reflexes are mind-boggling"... both could have been seen to beat greats back in the day during their primes... but Tyson had some upsets and really feel off in the late 90's.. and RJJ HONESTLY doesn't have a SRR or Leonard resume... let's be HONEST HERE... and losing to Tarver does more than put him behind names like Ali, SRR, Leonard, Armstrong and the such... so it's very interesting how those two panned out...

Pacman had to do the impossible just to get his recognition.. from both of RJJ's and Tyson's tenth fights, people were thinking... "Can this really be the next ATG? Are we truly seeing the greatest ever?" True they were both overhyped and don't compare to the unheralded heroes who still hold the spots of greatness over today's crop of fighters, but they both had top tenalltime skills/ power/ speed.. and both captured boxing in the 90's.. so in a way, I think both deserve to be mentioned just at the idea of perspective even more than Pac and Floyd who both to me, don't make a case to be in the top ten ATG.... (maybe skillwise, Prettyboy could have a shot) but on all out fighting and accomplishments and heart and skills.. Pac n Money aren't ahead of Ali and etc... and neither are RJJ and Tyson.. but as I said, at one point it looked like RJJ and Tyson were "THE ONE"... just my take...


Btw.. I voted Sugar Ray Robinson.. even though I have not really seen him.. before my time

 

The game was different back then. They had competitive series with multiple fighters and took risks early on because getting title shots was such a ***** (consider now that we have 4 available straps and double the weight classes). I also think that the notion of a "shot" fighter today is a little ridiculous sometimes. Part of it has to do with fighters fighting at such a short pace... If you're inactive at like 35 years old the next time you come back after 6+ months from your last fight you're going to be in terrible condition, as far as ring sharpness and physical condition.

 

I voted Ali, then saw SRR was an option, count my vote as one for SRR.

 

Sugar Ray Robinson, and it shouldnt even be a question. He is the greatest.

 

That is my point also. Defeats is not the end-all-be-all barometer how good a fighter at any given time. If it was Otke and Joe Cal would be two of the greatest off all time.

And this idea of of shot, old, drained etc are so exaggerated. If people look at the records of the many classic fighters like SRR, Greb, Armstrong- you typical modern fan would be shocked and would need to reconsider what it means to be shot, old and drained.

 

A lot of guys we consider shot are just ****ing old dudes(30+ is old in boxing) who haven't fought in a long time and as a result, enter the ring noticeably slower, gassed, and sometimes overweight.

You gotta fight to be in fighting shape. You gotta be in fighting shape to be a good fighter. Especially if you're past your physical best. Why do people think Hopkins is still viable. He stays in fighing shape year round, doesn't drink or **** around with drugs either.
