Yes. He's already up there as one of the greatest MMA fighters ever seen. I know people will have a problem with that but its the truth.
Well both are already guaranteed a special place in history, after all we're dealing with THEE greatest MW and THY greatest WW ever to compete in MMA I wouldnt place much stock on a Silva win - i think he would blow the much smaller Georges out the water. There would really have to be a stipulation where Anderson couldnt enter the octagon above a certain weight, otherwise it would be ALL OVER in the first round Chael on PEDs is a nightmare for anybody
Again, people are putting too much on Silva's size advantage. To begin with, it doesn't make sense for him to bulk up for a fight against GSP given St. Pierre's speed and conditioning. The last thing Silva wants is to be slow and easy to tire. St. Pierre is already 195Ibs and is apparently starting to have problems cutting to 170 and should he move to middleweight he'll only be bigger. I'd be shocked if there's more than 15Ibs difference between the two...anything more would be counterproductive for Silva.
Why 190 and not for Silva's 185lb title?, if it were catch weight it would probably be at 180, not 190.
Even if he manage this win, my opinion would be GSP still be a little below Fedor. Skillwise, they are pretty evenly match, what makes Fedor stand above GSP is his supreme calmness and his ability to take punishments. Would GSP be able to recover if he took that slam from Randleman? I doubt it. How about the punch from Fajita? Probably end up the same as what happened with Matt Serra. Offensive skills are equal, toughness is what sets them apart. Fedor fought tons of guys from all backgrounds that oversized him, and manage to be on top. What makes GSP-Silva matchup to be so special is because he have the opportunity to be an underdog when there is none for Fedor because he took out all oppositions and there is no higher weightclass for someone else to become champion to challenge himself. If we consider Fedor to still be in his prime and if he loses to Werdum a second time, then I would say GSP and Fedor are equal.
Fedor is also prideful enough not to expand his skill set. Yes, sambo works but training in other martial arts might be quite useful for him. Like getting caught in triangle the way he did wouldn't have happened if he trained a day in brazilian jiu jitsu. Yes, GSPs skills today look a lot sharper than Fedors. His stand up looks pretty damn crisp. His takedowns are second to none. If he is taken down no one can hold him down. Absolutely GSP has sharper skills. Fedor gets away with a lot because he sees **** coming and he's just faster than everyone he fights, with exception of Arlovski. He has more natural affinity for fighting than GSP.
it's funny cause just a few months ago, Fedor was like the SRR of MMA, the eternal GOAT. Now GSP is just one upset from overcoming that
They do train and do have triangle/armbars in Sambo. From Werdums description, he had to transition from triangle to armbar to triangle to armbar to triangle because Fedor was countering his moves. Fedor knows how to do those types of submissions and do know how to counter them......this doesnt mean that his counters will always be successful. The same as many of the greatest BJJ fighters have been submitted in the past by a lesser fighter. This is a bit like saying, GSP would have avoided being KO'ed if he only expand his skillset to other martial arts like boxing. Looks crisp but doesnt mean that he has a better standup. Fedor's standup is very unusual simply because of his Sambo background, this is however the reason why he was helping Denis Lebedev. Also unlike GSP, Fedor has actually fought against and trained with K-1 level fighters. What are you trying to say exactly?
It's not really all that funny. Fedor has long been considered the best, but while he has fought solid but unspectacular competition over the last few years, GSP has become one of the most dominant UFC champions ever. Having GSP close enough to Fedor to equal him with one MASSIVE victory is not a kneejerk reaction to Fedor's loss, it is something which occurred over time due to the extremely high level of skills and consistency shown by GSP.
To even approach Fedor's level, GSP MUST start fighting the best from around the world and from other promotions. Because of the media bias, there are many unknown yet very talented fighters out there from other promotions. Fedor did this when he fought champions from different promotions and be unbeaten for a longer stretch of time. Also GSP has not even come close to matching Fedor's skill level....tell me what skills does GSP poses that Fedor doesnt? And unlike Fedor, GSP wont even fight in his opponents strength. Thats right, he fights soley for the UFC and against UFC champions and against mostly American based fighters. GSP is the greatest UFC fighter but Fedor is clearly the better MMA fighter.
In his last 4 fights Georges has fought 2 Americans, a Brazilian and an Englishmen. 10 points for the 1st person who can tell me exactly how many Americans and Brazilians Fedor has faced in his last 4 outings? And lets not mention the fact that 3 of them were cut form the UFC, cause that wouldnt suit Morono's ever shifting and vague criteria
