Would Tyson have become world champ so quickly in another era ?

Not only that Berbick fought pretty tough. He held his ground and punched back like so many claim would have always made Tyson fold, but Tyson beat the **** out of him.

And thats why Berbick got KO'd so early. I think he tried to prove he wasnt afraid of Tyson and abandoned what boxing skills he had. Still fancied Tyson to do a number on him

I'm sure Berbick was 34 at this time.

I don't think there are many champions in history who would retain their title taking on a 22yo Tyson, in fact maybe none, not too many would retain against a 20yo Tyson. Call me a nuthugger, Tyson was that amazing and at his best I'd pick him over Holmes/Ali/Louis/Marciano, Lennox is a toss up.

It depends on which era is in question. I don't think that at 20 years of age, he beats George Foreman or Muhammad Ali, but I can certainly see him winning the belt at that age or younger in 1956 against Floyd Patterson or Archie Moore.

I'm not suggesting the young, green Clay would have lost, but 20 months into his career he was between his big troubles with Sonny Banks, soon followed by Doug Jones & Henry Cooper.
So I think the 32 year old Berbick would have given him a very difficult close fight.

The only era where I see him having trouble is the Ali, Frazier, Foreman era and the Holmes era.

There are some time periods when Tyson can't touch the belt. Tyson was never going to beat Joe Louis so you can forget those years, never going to beat Ali so can forget those years. The 70's in general would have been bad news for Tyson.

He'd accomplish the same feats during Jack Johnson or Rocky Marciano's eras. I don't see any of those opponents being a threat.

Imagine a young Kid Dynamite today, he would annihilate everything in his path with ruthless efficiency, like an atom bomb.

To answer the thread title, I do think Tyson would've also pulled it off in Patterson's era.
