Thats it, if for example Floyd was fighting 6 times a year then a loss would be forgiveable but since Dec 2007 he has fought only twice compared to Overeem 19 times. Floyd beats Marquez and Mosley Overeem beats Peter Aerts twice, Badri Hari, T. Spong, G Saki, Mirko Cro Cop, B. Rogers.
I like Overeem. I just wish he would establish his dominance in MMA. Strikeforce needs to get their **** together and start putting some decent fights together. Their heavyweight division for all it's talent - is becoming a farce. Did someone say "Strikefarce"?
These guys who fight rarely and try to protect their records and their bank balance don't realise they are affecting their ability and actually shrinking their bank balance. Overeem looks so sharp, in shape and always improving! He is also becoming a bigger star and maximising his earnings. Unfortunately some of these guys realise they have become a lucrative product and think they can pick and choose how their life goes - this isn't always true - someone should have a word with MArquez, Bradley, Wright etc Mayweather is now in that phase but it seems his life is imploding and he is consumed by his own press clippings.
Totally agree! I'm a massive fan of Overeem and love that I get to see him in action so often. While his MMA competition has suffered a bit due to his K-1 ambitions, I think this year MMA will take a slightly higher priority. He's already slated to face Werdum early next year.
I think his MMA comp has sufferred due to SF and Dream providing low quality fights. He fought as often as he could. In title fights both orgs gave him opponents coming off of losses. He just wants to get paid. The only org who will continously test him is UFC but they'll tie him up with a contract!
Yeah Strikeforce and DREAM haven't helped matters. Although the whole Fedor/Overeem debacle was due partly to Overeem's commitment to K-1. Let's just hope it doesn't happen this year. The early signs are good and Strikeforce finally seem to be able to get their **** together and make some fights.
Agree totally the reason why Tyson was such a big star was activity rate. Foughts 29 times in his first two years as a professional fighter, fought 35 times (under the leadership of Cus D'Amato, Roony, Jacobs etc) from March 1985 to June 1988. Think about it, thats 3 years and 3 months where he foughts 35 times.... Thats 39 months.. Huge star, great fighter who literally improved year upon year. To Unify a heavyweight division,winning all the belts WBC, WBA, IBF To win the Lineal To beats at the time guys like Tillis, Green, Ribalta, Berbick, Smith, Thomas, Tucker, Biggs, Holmes and Spinks is incredible. The manner in which he did aswell. Alistair is improving hugely....if he can continue his K1 progression for 2011, and perhaps take on Werdum, Silva and Fedor or something along those lines then it would be incredible. Hell why dosent Overeem test the waters in Boxing, take on few journeyman like Rob Calloway, R. Hersisa see how he does.
thats great so what stops other fighters from doing the same, staying active I mean, besides the obvious injuries. is it safe to say if he were to sign with the UFC they would not allow him to fight as often, even if he wanted to fight 5 fights in one yr exclusively with them (they wouldnt have it any other way)
Love the activeness, but it comes at a price of quality of opponents in MMA. I don't believe he isn't willing to fight top tier MMA guys, but his schedule won't allow enough prep time.
True but if he sat around waiting for orgs to give him something decent then he would have missed out on about $500k from K1.
Only thing is Floyd fights 2 fights per year, yes, but those 2 fights are 12 rounders.. so 24 rounds a year. all of those opponents mentioned above wouldn't be 24 rounds of action combined, which takes more out of an athlete than fighting 3X3's
