True, with Ali you simply couldnt catch him, with Tyson it a mixture of his head movement and also the fear of an avalanche of punches coming your way if you miss him.
I loved Tyson's "make them miss, make them pay" rapid way of slipping punches & countering with timed bombs & ferocious combinations, with such insane speed it was like he was operating in 'Bullet-Time'. Talk about 'Nuclear Deterrent'!
Again: Yes, his best was the two or three years before the exile. But you for some reason took his whole seven year career pre-exile into the equation which made people drag up his fight with for example Banks. Ali was a kid just starting out when he met Banks, no way was that a prime version. If you want to compare 86-88 Tyson against 65-67 Ali; fine. But you can't hardly make a case that Tyson against Bruno and Douglas should be excluded but that Clay's early pro fights shouldn't.
Thats what i meant, the best pre exile version of Ali and 86-88 Tyson. However i thought i would generalise it and jus stick with "Rooney" Tyson and "Pre exile" Ali because i didnt think people would need dates they would know which versions im talking about If people cant understand Peak Pre Exile Ali and Peak Tyson under Rooney its not my fault. And im not the one that mentioned, Banks, Bruno or Douglas
Only if you're dumb enough to ignore the role that skill plays in defence. Put the average guy in sparring and tell him to fight like Ali. Then watch him get beaten up. That's what I mean by a poor defence.
all clay did was run backwards if he ever took a step forward he would have been killed. no wonder so hard to hit but then when against the ropes he got the **** punched out of him he had a terrific chin but its made him pay in later life.
I think Tyson was easier to hit because he was coming forward, short and easier to catch Ali was harder to catch because he had the better legs, moved backwards (and sidewards) away from punches. Even though Tyson was much easier to hit, i think there isnt that much difference on how many punches they were hit with (i know im gonna get lots of crap over this)
If you can't understand the difference between defensive technique and raw ability, I recommend the General forum.
